I wanted to start this thread to talk about the number one absolute best form of musical media out there: vinyl!!! I have a small but precious collection that I've lately been working on expanding (once I got a new record player), and decided that it's time that all the cool cats that have a collection come out and tell everyone that doesn't have one how uncool they are.

I have a big vinyl collection but that's mainly down to the fact that I dj playing everything from 60s ska, rocksteady, 2 Tone, Northern Soul, Funk, 60s Garage & Psych, R&B, Jazz, Latin & Hammond Grooves.

Jazzman Records is probably my favourite site at the moment to get 45s from as they put sound clips up on their site off all the soul, funk & jazz singles they stock.
I also get vinyl from Reggae Revive, Reggae.co.uk, netsounds & ebay.

I get the majority of my vinyl from Ebay currently, although I also get some at discount shops if I find a good deal. I think Chimx would be the only person on this site interested in my collection, though.

Ha ha somewhere to boast. I have 200 vinyls. I'm very pleased today. Went to a record fair yesterday and picked up a Conflict album, Never Mind the Bollocks ($10!!), The Exploited: Let's Start a War and Punk and Disorderly: Further Charges.

Personally, I donīt get the hype about Vynil. We have better and bigger forms of storing music nowadays.

Really? :o

I'd love to hear what this new media is.

Anyone seen one of these before? It's a laser turntable which uses 5 lasers to read the vinyl. If someone would like to get me one for Christmas I'd be very happy. ;)

I've seen those before. What's their effect on records? Are they more or less damaging than a needle?

People like them for their authentic and genuine sound.

I don't mind them and will occasionally listen to a few records with an old player. They're not the most convenient, but I enjoy them.

Stuff that was recorded for vinyl will always sound better on vinyl. I don't have any, but am eventually going to acquire the hundreds of vinyls that my mum's brothers left at my grandparents place. Hundreds of them- and awesome, awesome bands... *waits patiently* Unfortunately this happens to be in South Africa.

I donīt think there is no substantial difference in the sound, but then again... Iīm from the "CD era".

I can't tell any improvement from CD in the sound of vinyl. I listen to records because I have lots of great music on records and used LPs are cheap as shit, not because of the sound quality.

I like vinyl because I think it's a more authentic experience than just putting in a CD. Albums always have better cover art, and sometimes include really cool inserts, and the act of putting on a record and listening to it is more fun to me than just putting in a CD.

True. Holding an LP is like holding a real work of art, both graphic and musical. Not like a little plastic jewel case you have to squint to see.

Listening to Why Do Fools Fall in Love by Diana Ross on vinyl now
both the record and the box are in perfect condition
got it for $1

I have about 300 records which are mostly all thrash metal. Some of them are picture-discs and quite rare so my collection might be worth a few bob. I know about 7 or 8 of them are worth about Ģ200 together but I wouldn't sell them. A couple are signed by the bands. My mother has thousands of records which includes Beatles/Hollies singles and stuff like that. I love vinyl and I really need to get my hands on a record player as I haven't had one in years.

I donīt care if itīs Vynil or a CD. As long I can hear the music itself, I donīt give a shit.

I have a problem with people boasting the size of their record collection, only to say that they don't own a record player. What do you have records for? Why do you love them? To look at them? Great.

Also people who think that any Beatles or Elvis or Bob Dylan record is valuable are hilarious. Everytime they walk into a record store and take a look through the LPs, they become shocked at an original pressing of Rubber Soul or something going for $10 or less. Some buy everything they get their hands on, thinking they're getting a deal of a lifetime.

Eh, I did this for a while. My old record player broke and I didn't get a new one for a while.

Any of those for cheap is a deal, but not because they're monetarily valuable, just because they made some fucking great music.

vinyls are better because of the way they are made. the needle is more precise, when music goes through something digital it is broken into bits and not every part of the sound is taken in, this is even true on 'lossless' audio formats such as FLAC and WAV.

Think of a vinyl as a fractal, its (the fractal) perimeter is infinte, the more you zoom in, the more detail you find, this goes on forever, a record is the same in the sense that it has very minute 'hills' and 'valleys' that get left out on a CD, a CD would be like a rough outline of a fractal/vinyl

My parents have records in storage, I'm not sure how many but it seems to be a good sized collection. Hopefully in a few years I'll be able to take some of my dad's old punk records for myself. We'll see.
