That is an interesting question. Perhaps the generation of the 1960s, with its more visible protest, made many great revolutionaries more visible to a larger portion of the people. Today's greatest leftist, living intellectuals are Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn. Both of them became visible during the 1960s.

I really cannot say, though, whether the '60s were more radical, or just more visible in their radicalism.
