They have, they were just too leadership-centered which led to they're downfall.
There is this documentary 'the people of the shining path' which you can see on the net.

They were not terrorists.

In that video, the shining path members who are locked up as political prisoners are self sufficient. They dont want to be a burden on the rest of the workers. However the prisoners were exterminated by the government i believe.

There still are around 1,000, there is a news article actually that was recent, claiming this.
The Government is of course doing their best to abolish them.

MRTA was more of a normal guerilla organization, there's no real reason to discuss 'em in combination with Shining Path except they happened to be in the same country.

The Shining Path were a Khmer Rouge-like group that carried out terrorism against working people, labor unions, anyone who didn't precisely toe their line.

Even the semi-Maoist Monthly Review had to acknowledge what the Shining Path were doing. (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1132/is_n10_v44/ai_13607596)

Would it kill you not to slander revolutionary communist movements? The Shining Path were nothing like the Khmer Rouge, that is an upsurd comparison. Pol-Pot never claimed to be a Maoist or employed any Maoist tenets while in power. If the Shining Path were terrorists, why did they bring Peru to the brink of revolution and force the government to establish virtual martial law. The Shining Path did make major mistakes on how they ran the people's war (ie killing opponents, one man power centralization), but they were able to win the support they acquired because of their empowerment of woman and liberation of workers by kicking wealthy bourgieousie land owners out, and giving the land to the peasantry class.
