View Full Version : Using a skateboard for transportation

I am interested in using a skateboard as a method of transportation for my 5 block walk to work every day. I have to walk 5 blocks from the bus stop to work each day, and I think a skateboard may aleviate boredom. Would I loose the health benefits of my walk, if I start using a skateboard?

it would be fun if your walk is downhill, but skateboarding 5 blocks on even ground can get tiring and old. unless you can do tricks and stuff on nearby objects.

Tiring is fine, if it supplies me with sufficient exercise.
I am finally getting to where I can feed myself, without worrying about being ejected from my home. Now that I am eating, I want to start exercising again.
So I have been walking, but I think from what I have seen, skateboards look fun and interesting.
I am 20 years old, do you think I am too old to be riding a skateboard? I haven't seen any one but small kids with one in my hood.

skateboarding would be a fun way to start but if your new I wouldn't suggest going down hill at more than a 5 degree angle going on even ground can be fun too especially if you don't know what your doing like me (=

Well, if you've never used a skateboard before, I would suggest training for a while. As for exercise: it can be really tiring, so that should do.
And too old? nah, I've seen people about 30 years old using skateboards as transportation, usually in cities.

Cool beans. I am pretty sure I have access to a skateboard as well as a helmet. So I think I will do that then.
I now declare this thread open to all discussion of the use of skateboards, for recreation, combat, or transportation!

Well what I would do first is inspect your skateboard if its from toys R us it is normally crap but still ridable (just barely). Then i would go out find someplace desertedish and practice just rideing the skateboard. Then once that is down practice ollieing while standing still. Then practice ollieing while moveing (I need to lear how to do this). Again I'm new to skateboarding so any advice would be appreciated.

Skate more then the 5 blocks, cruise everywhere! I dunno if your into skating, like, street skating, but learning how to throw some flip in flip out shit can make your 5 block cruise sick. Wax up every single curb or shit to slide between that distance and your gonna have a sick wake up trip and return trip. As for health reasons, skateboardings going to help. Its going to make your legs incredibly strong, builds up muscle, and is highly athletic, specially if your throwing shit down on everything! Or if your gonna just cruise it, it is still healthy, and you can make it a fun cruise :P

Wow, this thread is wacky.

Of course not.

Well, I ended up getting a pair of rollerblades and a helmet. The skateboard I was going to get broke. I was trying to use it, and it ended up pulling the "truck" out of the board. It was about 14 years old, from what I understand.
But I rode some spiffy rollerblades to work today, and while I would love to ride every where. It is a 20 minute drive to work every day, then a 15 minute walk. So I am starting with the rollerblades instead. It was fun.

I used to have Tony hawk's Skateboarding on the PS1 and I was amazed at the different kinds of tricks that skateboarders are able to do (I assume they do them in real life as well as in the game). Personally, I would just use a bike.

Yeah, as a skater myself I have to say it's an awesome form of transportation. You can carry it on/in your backpack easily enouth.

lol ya thats what happened to my old board I was rideing along after hearing a few miner snappy noises and then the trucks just came off sucked. I got a new one though and I find it better than roller bladeing.

I don't know if this happened or happens to other people, but a few years ago when I first started skateboarding, my achiles tendon hurt alot for the first week after I started because by foot wasn't used to the motion. If this does happen to you, just don't skateboard for a week and you'll be fine.

You shouldn't worry so much about fitness or age.
If you eat healthy and are active (ie: you do something more than sit on the computer all day), you will maintain a healthy body weight. That body weight varies from person to person. Healthy isn't necessarily the image the media portrays on weight loss supplement or exercise equipment commercials.
And you're not "too old" to do anything. Don't ever let anybody tell you that. Age isn't a constraint any more than race, gender, sexuality, or class are. It's up to us to break those stereotypes, and not let the image-dominated society we live in control us.

too lazy to read the whole thread, but longboards are a lot more fun than ordinary skateboards, they are little pricey ($150-200) but will last much longer, you cant really do the same tricks you would on a normal skateboard (like ollie'ing) but they are made for cruising. I would suggest a gravity skateboard.
and unless your reflexes are extremely poor or you plan on bombing a hill at speeds in excess of 20-30 mph, i wouldnt get a helmet, you'll look like an idiot.
also note that youll build up certain muscles in one leg, and different muscles in the other if you dont switch sides off. not too big of a deal, but it is nice to have balanced muscles. My legs at one point were visibly disproportionate to each other because i never switched sides i skated with. and riding switch can be difficult to get used to, like writing with your left hand (or if your left-handed writing with your right hand.).

No, skating actually requires quite a bit of energy and practice depending on how far you want to go with it.
You should probably try it out and see if it suits you; a skateboard is lighter and much more convenient to carry than a bike. If you don't like skating, you can always go back to walking.

Actually, I see a lot of people using long boards as transportation to and from campus, It seems like a fairly good mode of transportation.

Yeah, longboards are cheaper and a bit easier to ride/more comfortable than pro skateboards.

at over 30 years old ( ) i decided to get a skateboard last year. i wanted a long board for cruising as i'm well aware of my limitations so wasn't interested in doing tricks. a skate shop sorted me with a 2nd hand larger than normal shortboard as i couldnt afford a longboard and i was off.... i was doing ok and within a couple of weeks had gained confidence but - note to all... don't skate when pissed! i was heading to the train station after drinking way too much at a pub when 'pissed logic' kicked in and i thought "i'll be right to skate". big mistake! i hit a crack and was too pissed to even break my fall. one broken nose and a shit load of blood later and i was on the one hour long train trip home fielding weird looks and questions from other travellers ( ). message - skating is fun and great transport but don't let your ambitions get in the way of your ability.

So true, I'm lucky I didn't end up paralyzed stemming from when I was in junior high, I had a skateboard (that had a pic of che on the bottom) and I tried all sorts of stupid shit, fancing myself an x-games competitor.
