I don't know much about the guy, but I watched the crap Danny DeVito biopic of him last night.
Two things about him pissed me off - his thoughts that the communist party was "un-American", and the fact that he wasn't interested in revolution. In one speech (in the film) he said "the working man has become a part of the middle class, and is going to stay there". I prefer the idea of no classes.
The way it is protrayed in the film is that the power went to his head, and he acted better than the next man. He wasn't interested in true revolution, but he did aid the working man.
In some ways he was like a "benevolent businessman".
Hopefully someone knows more about him than just the film, because that's obviously glamourised and what not.
