That's an interesting document - among other things for its acknowledgement of the degree of popular support for the Cuban government. Not the kind of statement that usually appeared in the Kennedy administration's public pronouncements.

I'm still reading through it, but I thought this statement was interesting :

"On the contrary, the situation will probably begin to improve within a year or so, as the new Communist-type organization takes hold, managerial experience increases, and foreign trade is adjusted to new channels."

Statements like these from the Kennedy administration is what got Kennedy shot, all his buddies thought he was too soft on the Commies, especially after the Bay of Pigs.

"The fact remains that Castro has had to control tensions, jealous-ies, and conflicts of interest and purpose among his principal lieutenants: Raul Castro, the head of the armed forces; "Che" Guevara, the director of industrial development; Nunez Jimenez, the director of agrarian reform. There could be a falling out among them at Castro's funeral. There would almost certainly be a struggle for power among them afterward, which might break into the open."

HA ! They underestimate Che and the rest of the guys, they never would have allowed that to happen. I doubt Che would even want to rule the country, it would probably be Raul and everyone would accept it. However, I think if Raul took power we might have seen a drastically more repressive Cuba.

Actually, this was from CIA careerists, not Kennedy political appointees. The Kennedy administration never said anything like this in its public statements, and engaged in more blatant aggression against Cuba than any other U.S. administration.

One major figure has been omitted in this discussion: that BASTARD BATISTA et al. He and his cronies had perverted Cuba into a wholly owned mafia subsidiary who raped the land and people.
Had Batista remained in power, does anyone think Cuba would be little more than a Casino resort to launder money and exploit the masses?
At least now, the masses have excellent heath care and 97% literacy! Compare that to America,, the "Land of the Free" ha ha ha ha
