I'm quite clear on the opinions of leftists when it comes to abortion. I was just reading a book, however, discussing sex-selective abortion rates in India and the statistic that there are 36 million less women in India than should be, because of sex-selective abortion.

The first thing I thought when I saw this was, "That's fucked up." Now I'm interested to see what the opinion of the revleft community is on this subject.

<_<

EDIT: I'll add another little tidbit to make it interesting.

"The monetary cost of a sex-determination test and abortion are lower than the thousands of rupees needed for a girl's dowry."

India is rather a rather backwards country socioeconomically. They still have a beautiful country and culture (and some great cuisine). Some of the prettier girls at my school are Indian.

Very sad. :(

Indian girls are hot... but that is not the point most of these abortions happen in the farming areas of India where men are still the "dominant ones" where men stay home and help the farm while women go away women are "bad for business" its very sad...soon the birth rate will be low and everybody will wonder why... and it will all stem back to the rural areas and the serious sex based abortion.

The sexism and patriarchy that's at the root of this problem should definitely be opposed, but if your question is whether these kind of abortions should be outlawed / forcibly prevented, the answer is a definite no.

You can't fight reaction with more reaction. Taking away women's ability to even marginally control their reproduction will only reduce their power in society and perpetuate the values that are at issue here.

As usual, education and economic integration is the best approach. The more economically empowered women become, the less motivation there will be to pass them up in favour of boys and the less power men will have to dictate "propper" gender roles.

Theres certaintly nothing inherently wrong with sex selective abortions they just reflect socio-economic disadvantages of having female children, and thats whats wrong, not the abortions themselves. The real problem is attempts to ban sex-selective abortions.

Whats really fucked up is indian government attempts to ban sex selective abortions.

As long as women in India are burned alive by their husbands who want to get more money from a second (or third, or fourth) wedding there will be a demand for sex-selective abortions. Just remember a lot of arabic families used to bury baby girls in the desert to avoid having to pay to get them married, not to mention potential dishonor for the family if a girl has sex before marriage or was raped. It was Islam that banned this practice and ended the darkest era for mid-oriental women.

I have to say I agree that a law is not a solution and will only lead to illegal abortions in India. Still, my anti-fa sense is tingling and I am afraid of this practice spreading to the Western world under the form of "pure breeding" to select not only the sex but also the eyes and hair colour and (why not?) brain size, muscle mass, hereditary traits, shape of nose... Am I paranoid?

no, i dont think you're paranoid at all. i've heard of a few people advocating it but i'm pretty sure the vast majority of americans would oppose it.

hmmmm in my opinion, the bigger problem is socio-economic disadvantages associated with femalel children, not the governments attempt to ban it. don't get me wrong, i agree it shouldn't be banned. but if you look at it from the indian governments point of view, they are just trying to keep their country from running out of indian women. now what would be the better solution to this than banning sex selective abortions? solving the social stigmas about female children, of course!
