For a United Anti-War Movement

The anti-war movement faces a dilemma in the coming months. Disunity between the largest coalitions has manifested itself in the form of 3 different anti-war actions being called in the coming months.

1. A national demonstration in Washington DC on January 27th called by United for Peace & Justice (UfPJ).
2. A national demonstration in Washington DC on March 17th called by Troops Out Now Coalition (TONC).
3. A call for local and regional actions on March 17th called by UfPJ.

The anti-war movement should support the calls for national demonstrations in Washington D.C. as well as the call for local and regional actions taking place around the anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq, but not on the same day. The results of these conflicting and competing demonstrations will be demoralization within our ranks and the appearance of being divided and weak.

In the face of this division within the movement it is up to the movement itself to insist on unified action. The signers of this statement therefore propose that people and organizations call on both of these coalitions to:

1. Endorse and build each others national demonstrations in Washington DC on January 27th and March 17th.
2. Call for local and regional actions on March 24th.

The Greater Boston Stop the Wars Coalition has organized locally with both of these coalitions and we have had successful actions when we work together. The same is true at the national level. The massive demonstration in Washington DC on September 24th, 2005 was almost two separate events until UfPJ and TONC were forced by the grassroots to unify their efforts. Again, the grassroots of the movement will have to speak up if we want our movement to be the most powerful expression of our anti-war sentiment that it can be.

Please sign this proposal and forward it to UfPJ, TONC and others who might be interested in building unified actions in the coming months. Please also contact the Greater Boston Stop the Wars Coalition if you would like to be added as an endorser of this statement.
