All my life I have been told Vladimir Lenin's last name was pronounced {Len-nen}, like John Lennon. But I was told by a friend that he watched this documentary where this guy was really pissed off how people always got it wrong. It is pronounced {Lye-nin}.

Does anyone know if this is true?

I say Len-in. That is how it looks, and I pronounce words with my nice anglo style, except french words which I say in a heavy anglo accent in the franco way;)

OK, both are correct per se. "Lyen-in" is how it is said slavicly, with you tongue pushed right up the front of your mouth, as is common is russian etc. "lenin" is just adapted to fit the english speaker as it would be difficult to pronounce it properly.

Take for example "Paris" In english we pronounce it "Pa-riss" but in the local tongue it it "Par-ie" just an adaptation.

Does that clear it up at all?

Sounds more Russian to me saying it with a really deep voice and grunting...

I remember when we met we talked about this when in that shop looking at Soviet Flags (I think, it may have been the medals shop)....

On the topic of pronounciation...
How are you meant to say Che?
Is it Sh-ay or Ch-ay? I always say Chay. But all TV programmes and stuff say Shay. You know the different i mean right? Like Sh-erry or Ch-erry

Actually, SoM, that conversation happens to be going on in the Ernesto "Che" Guevara forum.;)

And on the pronounciation I say "len-in", like a mixture of lenny and linen. It's easier on the tounge.

I remember that! What did we choose? Anyway, I'm sticking with Lye-in, I respect diversity (relativism).

I think the real slavic pronunciation is lot Lye-nin but Lye-nyin or sg like that, because in these languages e and i palatalize the consonants.
