View Full Version : Personal possessions

I know there are different theories on the matter (Proudhon, for instance, declared that even personal possessions were classified as property and therefore theft), but in a post-revolutionary society, will we have personal possessions? Will one be able to have his own cell phone, shampoo, cigarettes, guitar, etc.? Or will they all be public property for everyone to use?

Of course there will be personal possessions. There will be no ownership.
We will all have what we need and desire and thus have no need to covet what other people have. There is no point in stealing if you can have it for free anyway.

But if we possess them, does that not mean we own them? If we own them, does that not mean they are property?

This is a bit off topic, but I don't want to create a new thread. For things that are greatly demanded but slowly produced (i.e. video game consoles), how would everyone be able to get one? If there was a wait list, and some got the item but not all, would that not give an incentive to steal?

Read up a bit on the anarchist individualists. They make some very interesting discussions about possesion versus property. Even without property, we still need a conception of things that we need to live. This is possesion.
Things will be shared. But if you need something to live, then you need it to live.

"Property," "possession," "ownership," and other synonyms all mean the same thing.
There will be no property of any kind in communist society. There will be no such thing as a "personal possession" in a communist society. The very idea will not exist because it will not refer to any existing social relation.
I explained the idea in detail in my essay Whose Class Struggle? (http://www.revolutionaryleft.com/index.php?showtopic=42555&hl=)

There's a difference between personal and private property. No one's going to ask you to share a toothbrush or anything like that.

LOL
Who would want your used comb or toothbrush in the first place?
Personal property != private property.
We seek to abolish bourgeois private property, not self-aquired personal possessions.

Personal Property = Means of production *factories, industries, etc...*

We want to centralize & make public the means of production not the commodities that result from it.

I've shared toothbrushes before...
Heh but really, I agree pretty much with all of this. In an anarchist society, the community would respect personal wants and needs and allow that to be fulfilled. As for things such as game consoles, concerts etc they would probably be high demand. Guess it comes to first in best dressed. Then sharing them with your mates :D

Yes this is correct, theres a famous example about socialists wanting to take over the clothing factory not collectivise the jeans that come out of it. Private property in a marxist theoretical sense reffers to private ownership of the means of production.
