I don't have any real opinions on them, even though they're sellouts.
What do you think of them?

umm they suck and American idiot is trying to make a buck off of anti-bush sentiment.

I didn't know of them until American Idiot, and thought the album was pretty good (although, as I learned later, pretty much what LeftyHenry says about it). Their live show I went to was damn good though. And Basket Case is one of the best sing-along songs ever.

Bunch of Douche Bags if you ask me. They lack serious musical ability, their three chord songs get pretty tiresome.
Bad Religion is a much better punk band that took advantage of the anti-bush era.

sell outs and i havent heard of them coming out against capitalism, though i could be wrong. it seems kind of like theyre trying to fill the void left by rage against the machine. plus theyre annoying as hell now.

I liked them from around 2000, I was really into them upto about the age of 16 or so, and have seen them live more than once. However, like in all things you move on and listen to new stuff. To be honest I rarely listen to them or much anymore. To be honest I don't listen to that much punk at all any more with the exception of the Clash and Wire really. I think the genre has too many wannabe rebels with no musical or artistic talent.

I liked them when they were on Lookout! Records, their albums 1039/SOSH and Kerplunk!. Dookie and Insomniac were mediocre, I liked Nimrod for the fact that they experimented a bit on it. I liked one or two songs off Warning, and I agree with the folks here American Idiot was shit.

I love-a-da-punkrock, and most of it's sub-genres(pop,folk,ska,hardcore,ect...) Greenday was a respectable punk band in the 90's, that sang about life, society, growing up, and so on. But when they hop on a trend (Bushbashing) just so they can ride it to gain poularity, they loose any credability as a respectable punk band as far as I'm concerned. Don't get me wrong, I don't like bush, it's the priniciple of the matter. They're not trying to make a change, they found a popular political movement, and took advantave of it to gain popularity and money. That in my oppinion, is not "Punk" in any sence of the word. Sellouts.

I really like their Dookie album. Other than that I haven't really liked their other albums. I especially did not like American Idiot. They just latched onto the dissatisfaction of the majority of people with how the war went and not that the US was at war. Now if they had come out with a song while the US was planning on invading Afghanistan I might have had a little respect for their pop-punk ballad.

I read in a guitar magazine that Billy Joe (greendday frontman) is one of the most respected musicians in the world, i almost died, his musical repetoir extends to three chords, its so sad, what has music come to when a dough bag like that is respected.

Three cords maybe, but its more about song writing, I guess. May not be quite Joe Satriani, but he still wrote good catchy music.
Personally as a drummer my self, Tre Cool (worst stage name ever) is really good, very fast.

Green Day are 30-40 year old neverbe rebels. At least PG sing about ant-capitalism as opposed to populist overmixed pseudo-pop-punk with too many effects and moaning dirges that make you want to bust your eardrums through your nose.
On Less Talk More Rock, there is a huge range of ways they deliver their message, from the accessible to the aggressive, and all have a common message, and all are believable to people other than 8-14 wannabe rebels! Hows about you go on youtube and first type "And YOu Thought Nation-States were a Bad Idea", and then type "(you have to be an) American Idiot (or mentally deficient to enjoy this song)".
Think: Who takes influence from Fugazi and who gave influence to Blink?

It's not that they only ever use 3 chords. It's that they suck at those three chords. You can't always fret-wank, lest you turn into Yngwie Malmsteen.
Three cords maybe, but its more about song writing, I guess. May not be quite Joe Satriani, but he still wrote good catchy music.
Errr... No it's not. It's about paint-by-numbers pop-rock, also, as Orwell would call it, prolefeed. Surely you understand that this extends to those who want to be counter-culture, else they would be counter-culture. And have they ever even been censored?
Personally as a drummer my self, Tre Cool (worst stage name ever) is really good, very fast.
Not that I like his stuff, but look for Joey Jordison.
And the worst stage name ever is Little Jimmy Urine. Ironically, his band is the sex! (Mindless Self-Indulgence).

pseudo-pop-punk
So you are saying they are fake pop punk? No Greenday are just pop-punk, end of story.
I hate it people use words they don't understand, and of course get the context utterly wrong.
Tosser
Everyday, sweetie.
And have they ever even been censored?
Who gives a shit?
There are lots of bands who shit all over Greenday, Fugazi, Propagandhi, etc who have not been censored.
Hell there are better socialist bands (and considerably more intelligent and musically talented) than Propagandhi. Could Propagandhi, get a song about the Spanish civil war, with the lyric "if I can shoot rabbits / then I can shoot fascists", to the top of the UK popular music charts? Could Propagandhi write an album, containing songs warning about the rise of the far right into the top ten? No way.
Even Pete Doherty could write a number album with a song entitled "Arbeit Macht Frei", to the top of the album charts.
The simple fact is that Propagandhi are not very good, they have limited talent musically, their lyrics - while abrupt - lack any kind of depth and with the exception of wannabe rebels, they practically don't appeal to anybody.
The talent to fretwank at break-neck speed without due consideration for musical depth.
But you like Propagandhi, a band with about the same musical depth as Chris De-"fuckin"-Burgh and McFly, so I don't know where you get off accusing Yngwie Malmsteen off lacking "musical depth".

Hey it's just accessible poppunk with a political message. They're like a political ash. They've probably been around the same amount of time as GD, but have always had an Anticap line, as opposed to Gd who cashed in on it. And yes they are pseudo pop punk. They suck too much even to be that. Also, err yea... Green Day are filthy rich.
Anyway, Rise Against are the band for me.

Can't say I really like Propagandhi..but thats just because I don't enjoy the sound of the music....I'm sure their lyrics are great (i"ll relisten to an album sometime).
Sure some wont like Greenday and some will...thats the case with every bit of music out there.
I find 1,039-Smoothed Out Slappy Hour, Kerplunk!, Dookie, and Insomniac to be good albums. I have Warning and Nimrod..but I have yet to listen to them all the way through and come to a conclusion. 1,039-Smoothed Out Slappy Hour Is a really fantastic album and definitely worth checking out if you like punk more then the garage rockish stuff they did later on.
I think American Idiot is an absolutely shitty album; it is a perfect example of a sellout. Maybe they have some good political views on the Iraq war and oil..but they sold themselves to the music industry in seconds and have produced an album of little value. AFI's newest album is sort of another example of the same kind of shit. Money and fame fucks up peoples heads it seems just as much as LSD or any other drug does....
Greenday really should be given credit though for how much of an influence they have been on so many others bands...their original sound you can hear duplicated or stylistically in so many other bands these days.
odd fact: The drummer happens to live in my neighborhood....which I'm sickened by..and even more sickened that I'm still living here....

A sullen riot penetrating through her mind
Waiting for a sign to smash the silence
with the brick of self control
Are you locked up in a world
That's been planned out for you ?
Are you feeling like a social tool without use ?
Scream at me until my ears bleed
I'm taking heed just for you

Were someone else's point of view
Waking up this time to smash the silence

If you compare AFI to Green Day, I'll kick yereddin!
But yea the new AFI album is a bit poo. It's ok but "Art of Drowning" shall never ever be surpassed. Ever. By anyone. Anywhere. As long as humanity exists. When the weasels take over, then they might make something better than AoD, but we'll all be dead by then (except raccoon).

AFI started off as very similarly to Green Day w/ a pop-punk-ish surfer type image:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d3/Dork-inside.jpg Eventually I suppose they decided that era was over and adopted the darker Misfits-type image. Im pretty ambivalent on them, but if you think 'Art of Drowning' was the best album ever you're seriously deluded :P .

I've done LSD, i was just commenting on how much money and fame changes people.
I think Greenday compared to AFI is a good comparison..they may be different musically but both bands went from putting out some strong influential music to later on at around the same time producing two completely corporate loads of shit.

I am extremely pissed off. why the fuck do people keep going off about propagandhi?!!! they're a fucking awesome band. i don't know very much of them, but what i do know is fucking amazing. and any band with a song on "Rock Against Harper" has great respect from me, due to the vast number of essays on it.
RIGHT! greenday!
basically i don't really care either way. i strongly dislike their whole sudden leftism, but other than that, i used to be a big fan for a while, they ended up being a part of my pathway to REAL punk, via me looking at their influences.
basically old greenday is light hearted and catchy pop-surf-punk, though light on the punk part. i still sisten to the older stuff if i don't really want to have to think about my music.
