for me Ho Chi Minh is the true communist and my idol
but whenever I try to talk to people about him, they seem to have a vision of him as a Pol Pot like, evil, tyrannical, genocidal, maniac
all he wanted was for him home country to be united and to be free from France
this just goes to show how stubborn the US government is... they finally lose a war in which they were actually the villain... so they spread the craziest rumors to the troops and they bring em back.... people are so ignorant....

He is a hero! The story about Vietnam is so glorious. A little army of guerrilas fought against the gian imperialistic army and won!
In Denmark there was a reclaim on the streets and we gave a big road a new name. "The Ho Chi Minh path"

Ho Chi Minh was a great man and leader. Let us not also forget he was crucial in defeating France and Japan, to great imperialist nations, at the height of their power when he fought and defeated them. I feel truly sad he did months before his dream of reniuning his country came into being. If little countries like Vietnam could defeat the imperialistic americans several times, people would begin to relieze they were backing a losing horse and the revolution would be one step closer. Anyone who has studied the Vietnam war understands why Che said "one, two, many Vietnams"

its hardly Ho Chi Minh's fault
anyway AK47
Ho Chi Minh was born Nguyen Sinh Cung in Vietnam in 1890 to a poor peasant family
later on he travels and lives in london for two years.. then moves to france where he becomes involved in the socialist-communist scene where he becomes Nguyen Ai Quoc which means Nguyen the Patriot
during 1919 during the Treaty of Versailles conference he tries to present Woodrow Wilson a proposal for Vietnam's independence from france and england
he becomes a founding member of the french communist party
he moves to Moscow to undergo education and training and is active at the fifth congress of the Comintern, criticizing the communist party for not being more aggressive toward colonialist countries
he travels to Guangzhou where he trains Chinese communist exiles in guerilla warfare and education
they are once again exiled and are relocated in the Soviet Union
throughout the next 20-some-ot years, he trains and gives education and instruction to his revolutionaries
during the end of WW2 he once again gives a proposal for Vietnams independence but it turned down again
on March 9 the Japanese disarm the french in vietnam and seize the country
this is seen as an oppurtunity for an uprising
they finally go in after Hiroshima is bombed where the Viet Minh attack and drive out the Japanese forces and take control and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam is formed... along with a withdrawl decree from the Japanese
Vietnam is now mostly free
but within 3 months the french retake control of Saigon and have power again
Ho is now forced to compromise... so the french say that they will recognize Vietnam as a free country only if they are allowed a small military prescence in the north
but pretty soon that prescence swells to 15,000
clashing now occurs between the Viet Minh and the French
a french carrier bombs Hanoi and kills an estimated 7000 vietnamese
the Viet Minh then regroup their 250000 troops drive french forces out
the french neogotiate saying that Vietnam is now free but associated with france
July 1- the first french sponsored government is set up in Saigon
the US then interferes by sending troops to the south to train them with US weapons
Ho Chi Minh is elected the leader of the Wietnam Workers Party
the french take many towns in Laos which they can operate safely in
Minh now wants a peace treaty
so a Geneva comvention is scheduled, wich one week before the Viet Minh retake those Loatian towns captured by the french
at the convention it is decided that Vietnam will be divided at the 17th Parallel to which the Viet Minh are to escape north and southern vietnamese stay in the south
france is now done with vietnam
the US instantly sends troops to the south
the south is renamed the Republic of Vietnam
clashes at the borders begin and the North moves into the south to help communsit camps, the Viet Cong
the southern camps unite with the Viet Minh and are changed into the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam
US now ups its help to the south
the southern people protest against the southern government and US occupation
communist forces now hold about half of south vietnam
the US now calls for bombings and the communist forces are calling for guerilla warfare in the hills
Lyndon B. Johnson calls for peace talks but Ho says he will not neogotiate under threat of bombing
the North now surprises the world by launching a strike on all of South Vietnam that is incredibly effective and US bases are taken and dismantled
the US calls for the bombing to stop completely
peace talks now begin between the North and South and the US
unfortunately, Ho dies of a heart attack, only six years before his beloved country is united under a solid peoples socialist republic
the US now resumes bombing and it now spreads into Cambodia, which helps lead to the rise of the tyrannical dictator Pol Pot
but the US attacks and bombing are ineffective due to the skill and heart of the North Vietnamese
and once again a large scale attack is unleashed on south vietnam and the US is now neutralized in the entire country
Nixon then calls for a withdrawl from Vietnam and a stop to all bombing
within 7 months, all US forces are out and the North has a chance to finally unite Vietnam
it is achieved and Vietnam is then renamed the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
the people hold a vote to rename Saigon and it is officially renamed Ho chi Minh City
the US refuses to recognize the new republic and severs all ties with them
Ho Chi Minh only wished for a reunited Vietnam
and he can hardly be blamed for the bad area Vietnam occupies and the successors that could have destroyed it

I agree, Ho Chi Minn was probably one of the greater communist leaders of the Asian Communist nations. So many went astray, it's actually nice to see such a ray of hope for the area.

Ho Chi was hardly a Communist leader...
his most important aspect was his patriotic urge to cleanse his motherland fromt he French opression and that was basicly it..
yet after the revolution he did turned up to be a good leader and a revolutionary...
yet some mistakes were commited as he himself said and some bloodshed happened... enevrtheless he created a socialist state wich i suport and endorse..

I think u'll find that Ho Chi Minh was a Communist but he wasnt interested in a Global revolution like Marx was. He was only really interested in liberating Vietnham from the French and so by that standard was more a left wing Nationalist

Who got their ass's kicked in vietnam? America. Who controls the media? America. So if they hate you, they'll try to get everyone to hate you.
Ho chi minh was a great man. Many of the people i know love capitalism, but yet most of them agree that Ho chi minh was very great.
I heard he was very sneaky too, to help promote his cause, he wrote a book about himselfs but under a different name.(for example, say i write a book under the name "bob smith" about how great "lostsoul" is). I don't know if its true(i heard it from many people), but i'm sure theirs a good reason for it. Also i remember reading somewhere that he may have been a soviet agent, and was using fake passports to travel around asia.
I highly suggest that if anyone has the chance to look into his life, i don't know minor details, but i do know his life is extremely intresting. To me it seems like Che's adventures.
Primus32302 - excellent biography of his life.
take care

I'm reading Ho chi Minh: a life and would second Primus' recommendation.
One of the interesting things about him is that he wasn't as interested in leading with a personality cult or the like. That's probably one of the reasons why he isn't as well known as some of his colleagues.

Just a random fact about Ho Chi Minh was in WW 2 some U.S. soldiers in Vietnam found some guerllias fighting the Japanense, and their leader was dying of fever, so they gave him some meds that saved his life. That guerllia leader was Ho Chi Minh! lol
