One of the main problems with Communist movements is public opinion, or public ignorance. As soon as the word 'Communism' is mentioned they switch off or go on a rant about it 'not working'. I suggest we all come up with the main failings of capitalism in modern society. Then we can see where leftist views can be applied. Hopefully after a lot of discussion we can reach some conclusions and then see how to best apply it. Just a thought on how to get some movements up and running. Any further or better ideas are also welcome.

Well, I know I bang on about locality, but it's incredibly effective to point out the failings of capitalism in peoples everyday lives. If the person you are talking to is working class s/he has been fucked over by capitalism!

As soon as you make a point about sweatshops, assassinations, coups etc, people tend to just think about capitalism being bad in distant, fantasy lands. Such things are the concern of youth without jobs! as soon as they have some investment in the world around them they will see capitalism from the perspective of a UK resident, and not be so bothered!

So yea, point out the failures of capitalism locally, im sure there is plenty of fucking crap going on that's the fault of the ruling class, where you live! There certainly is in the UK as a whole, unfortunately a lot of people blame immigrants.

Also, you don't necessarily need to mention the phrase "communist" in discussion. It can be instantly tied to many things that are negative and irrelevant. I would say it's important to mention Class and talk about things as they tie into the class struggle. You'll get more sympathy if you're talking about you and your co-workers lives, and making them better by doing stuff yourself! and showing their place in the class struggle. *Than if you go on about how many people die in the 3rd world.

*That's not to say that the suffering capitalism inflicts on the 3rd world is less important that the suffering of the working class in the 1st world. But the best solidarity we can show the working class in the 3rd world is by fighting the struggle at home.

I'm pretty sure that there are a couple of threads just like this somewhere in Learning...

I'll try to find them.
