After watching Al-jazeera's new english channel on tv for sometime today I was expecting the same old capitalist bullshit. But I actually found it to be a great station. They even showed a 20 minute segment about oaxaca today and it contained no bias even interviewing subcommandante Marcos. Any1 else see it? your views.

We actually have access to both Arabic and English versions of Al-jazeera on our sky television. I haven't had a look at the new English version.

Sky? Why would Rupert Murdoch be giving you Al-jazeera?

I dunno, but they are avilable. Other news stations include Sky news, News 24 (BBC), CNN, Fox News, Euronews, an Indian news station that broadcasts in English and CCTV9, a Chinese station.

I am told that the English version has been tamed somewhat after interferance from US interests, but still, great channel from what bits I have seen.

Does anyone know if broadcasts will be coming to the Pacific?

Yeah, Al-Jazeera is a great source of info. for news on the Middle East and what's really going on there.

Its decent, surprisingly.

Not even censored either, even first thing in the morning.

There was a programme on the EZLN a few days ago, decent as well.

Hmm, I hadn't heard about their english station before. I don't have satellite though, and I rarely turn on my TV.

They had a special on human rights violations earlier. 3 hours of it! CNN & Fox dont give you five seconds of news like that in a year.

Yeah Comrade. I seriously cant find a flaw in it thus far. In terms of Bias I mean. They Even have a programme about womens welfare, for a arab station thats pretty good. The only thing is that if something boring is on, its on for a while. What Im most fond of is the fact that the give you World news from all corners of the globe whereas Sky & others like it mostly focus on localised news & the middle east.

RTE news (ireland) , Euronews and Al-jazeera Uk are the only staions I now watch.

Yeah, its a pretty good station alright.

One thing though, I find its abit "pro-Israeli". I know that sounds wierd since were talking about Aljazeera - but I detect either a bias towards Israel or censorship. Thats MO. They could do a little better promoting the Palistinian cause.

Yeah, Euronews is good for world events. Its gone to hell in the last few months I think with too much "special features" on Europe and how "great" everything is. I dont really watch it anymore because of this. (also too much sport on it) (and that bloody "Its Somfy" weather add does my head in  ).

RTE is good for Irish news. Crap for everything else. I also think its VERY censored. They have not reported at all on the Bin Tax marches and struggle, and recently they have censored down IMO, the actual events of the Shell to sea battle. (now that I think about it, RTE is a load of rightwing BS - all that stuff they never ever show that goes on  )

And when the fuck are they going to stop playing that stupid christian nutter "angelis" bell ringing at the start.

I think CNN is interesting and have some good bits, in the sense that I find fascism genuinly interesting.

Sky News is the worst.

Eh, I don't think CNN is too bad. I mean if you turn on the TV and spend 15 minutes watching it I think you would be very shocked by the attitude they have taken against the war and against the falling middle class as of late.

I have come to find CNN to be one of the better U.S. news stations for the most part.

On the other hand Fox, hmm, there is fascism TV. :P

I mean, I'm sorry, I have to give it up to Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper on CNN. It sure beats listening to Bill O'Reilly or Sean Hannity.

I agree, CNN has been airing a lot of stories and specials such as "Broken Government" pointing out the overwhelming number of flaws in the US government. They don't go as far as actually saying that the US government is broken, rather it's more a watered-down critical analysis of it, but still it's a lot more than I would've expected.

Yeah. CNN is full of fascists...capitalists..whatever....Lou Dobbs on his witchhunt for illegal immigrant sympathizers..i used to be sympathetic to that shit...but his extremism turned me off quick as hell. And don't get me started on Nancy Grace. What a soccer-mom *****.

Praise al-Jazeera for putting across more than the shit that passes for news in the US all you like, but do remember it's still owned by the Emir of Qatar. Despite its relatively free editorial rein it is is still a tool of the ruling class, and you should be critical of all that it shows, like you would of any news provider. ;)

This is where I depart. From what Iv seen from Wolf is self sensorship, like that which Chomsky speaks about.

The questions he asks are deceptive, drawing the publics attention away from the critical and most relevent points which should be asked, drawing public attention into thinking within a particular box.

I mean, the US democratic system is just a complete JOKE not even worth discussing within. Yet Wolf Blitzer continues bolloxing on about the Republicans did this, and the Democrats did that - as if thats worth even thinking about. IMO, he simply adds to the other pile of shit who justify the present system by asking questions within the present framework.

Its exactly the same here in Ireland, although slightly better. The public are drawn and trained into seeing only within a box. All questions are asked and discussed within the parameters drawn by the main political parties and the issues they alone (with some exceptions) bring up. Those who ask questions within the present system only serve to facilitate it.

Thats why Joe Higgins of the Socialist party (the only member of the Irish parliament in this party and who's openly Marxist) gets right up the nose of the government in power, by asking questions and bringing issues to the attention outside that which is brought up by the government and main opposition.

I dont have that station :(

I must be missing loads by the sound of it :D
