I'd have to give an unequivocal fuck yes!
They unjustly conquered and occupied Vietnam against the will of its people and they suffered the consequences they so richly deserved.

That's odd. I'd have thought that a soldier that was reaping the rewards of a "conquered and occupied" wouldn't have wanted to spend their time dying in the jungle. Perhaps that's where the best butlers could be hired?

viewing the world in terms of national and not class is counterrevolutionary. poor folk got sent to kill poor folk for rich assholes.

seriously, this is a really worthless post. if you want to talk about the vietnam war then by all means raise some historical, social or political questions (off the top of my head it might be worth asking whether french involvement reflected primarily the direct economic beniefts of colonialism or the geo-politics of the cold war). Making moral assertions about how the french deserved what they got contributes nothing to the history forum.

this really is retarded...neither french nor american soldiers can be judged in such general terms.

A lot of the French soldiers were simply conscripts who didn't have much of a choice in joining the armed forces. Asking whether or not they were responsible for what happened really dodges the true questions and problems.

When Ho Chi Minh and leaders of the Vietnamese struggle planned out their offensives – military, political, or otherwise – against the different armies occupying their country, they had a strategic, overriding, long-term goal. That purpose was not, it is safe to say, making the enemy soldiers “suffer the consequences they so richly deserve”. The strategic goal was to force those imperial armies out of Vietnam.
You miss the point completely.

Some of the french soldiers had it coming for a long time.
This is from the jewish virtual library:
Many other Waffen-SS volunteers, including many Wiking veterans, avoided punishment by joining the French Foreign Legion, and many ex-SS men fought and died at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
A historical irony that Communist troops got them in the end!
