Fighting WorkChoices: Building Solidarity Action
When & Where?
Sunday November 26
2pm Gaelic Club, 64 Devonshire st Surry Hills
Speakers:
Dave Kerin - Union Solidarity in Melbourne, to discuss successful
organising strategies
Barry Hemsworth - Sacked CFMEU delegate supported by community pickets
Almost a year since 'WorkChoices' was passed, its effects are being acutely
felt. Many bosses are lashing out, sacking delegates and unionists, forcing
AWAs that slash conditions, moving to impose massive fines that can
demoralise workers and destroy their unions.
These laws criminalise workers struggles. To counter this community
activist groups around the country have begun to play an important role,
using direct action to support workers in struggle. The criminalisation of
unions and workers struggles has forced the community to act around what is
in essence now a democratic rights issue.
With the stated aim of "building a mass united front campaign on the ground
to defeat the repressive IR laws", Union Solidarity in Melbourne are the
most well organised and successful example of this approach. Over 10
disputes have been won with the help of Union Solidarity "community
assemblies" and they have established 8 local branches.
This forum aims to learn from these experiences and generate discussion
about how the Your Rights at Work movement in NSW can build capacity for
solidarity actions we face here.
