I've heard it suggested that John Lennon (and possibly Ringo Starr) were communists, whereas Paul McCartney and George Harrison were capitalists, and that their political differences were a cause of conflict. Of course, John and Paul continued their fighting after the Beatles broke up, but supposedly Paul also got in big fights with John and Ringo in the studio. Also, George was a Hindu, which is basically a form of spiritual capitalism.
Look at some of their lyrics:
If there's anything that you want
If there's anything I can do
Just call on me and I'll send it along
With love from me to you
-( "From Me To You" )
You're lovin' gives me a thrill
But you're lovin' don't pay my bills
Now give me money
That's what I want
-( "Money" )
These chorouses seem to be promoting communism and capitalism, respectively. So which is it? Perhaps we should look at their solo careers. Lennon recorded infamous left-wing anthem "Imagine", which oozes with Stalinist propoganda. One is also reminded of"I Don't Want to be a Soldier", expressing a fear of war, poverty, the bar, and religion. Look at "God", also, in which Lennon expresses his love of Yoko over all else. "Only People" expresses the theme that when the world unites, nothing will be impossible. And so on. I wonder if Mark David Chapman wasn't a right-wing McCarthyist. McCartney, on the other hand, was a money-grubber, who went through a bunch of crap to get his name listed before John's in the re-release of many popular Beatles songs. He also made that cheeky remark, "Us Communists? Why, we can't be Communists. We're the world's number one Capitalists. Imagine us, Communists".
What do you think?
