when people hear jamaica two things pop to mind bob marley and white sand beaches. well 4months before we host the opening ceremony of the cricket world cup im asking dont forget us... we have the highest unemployment rate in the caribbean 1.2 million able to work and ii.5% (138,000) out of jobs. recently we have been rocked by scandal after sacandal the ruling pnp has been found to have taken money ilegaly (from health road workss)to pay for election campaigns for the 2002 elections to quote omar "I ran with the money now i must run back with it" eople are living literaly next to raw sewage school got closed wednsday because of a faulty sewage main in school and on the road right out by the gate.. we have the highest murder rate in the caribbean- we know who commited the acts government sponserd "dons" and the police dont do anything because they are outgunned by the cash strapped dons whom each election force people to vote either pnp or jlp the main "garrisons" are tivoli gardens- jlp and arrnet-pnprape and carnal abuse have gone upwards and the government does nothing instead they give contracts to companies run bywho else themselves... recently parliment voted against increasing pay for teachers doctors and police officers but unanimously voted for a 50% increase in there pay my family was affected by this badly my mother being a teacher in a government funded school

Comrades the government is about to shut down 3 sugar factories(cane fields included) leaving hundreds unemployed i literally cried when i read this. I know Hati is worse off than us but they shove us a sham of a democracy out of the light we need help we owe so much and are in a vicious cycle of borrowing to pay back... im not sayin ditch hati and the rest im asking just not to forget Jamaica and the rest of the caribbean islands who seem to be gooing dow our deadly path

Do you mean in the English speaking Caribbean? Haiti has 70% unemployment, and some others are much higher than 11.5% as well.

I'm not saying it's not horrible, I just want to make sure we get out facts straight comrade.

Im right beside you fam. My Jamaican friend at school told me similar things to what you told me about your beautiful island.

Right now all we can do is just keep on recruiting, raising awareness in my opinion.

i fear that most caribbean nations led by hati will go down the route of africa with all this debt.... im sorry if i went on about my countries problems this was meant to be a light showing how the caribbean is really going to hell in a hand basket, i used jamaica because i live here and experience these things daily.. however this is meant to be a view of what really goes on in the caribbean from a point of view apart from hati as people think they are the only caribbean country that has it bad, however they do have it worse off than all caribbean nations and they like all nations of the caribbean need our help

i gotta admit i had no idea jamaica's situation was that bad. it thought it was fairly prosperous from the tourism trade, but i was way off the mark. im sorry to hear about this, and ill try to raise awareness of it among the people i know.

Check out a film called 'Life and Debt' by Stephanie Black if you want to get a good idea of the situation in Jamaica. It's also a good reminder of how economic imperialism works...
