I'm just curious as to what our American cousins think of this law, if any of you have been affected by it, directly or otherwise, and if you think any changes to how it works are needed ?
General opinions are welcome of course, I'm more curious about the people actually within it's effective range though (Americans then). Also, the fact that you people are all so opinionated should make this interesting.

I'd rather the affected parties were executed, but until then I'm fine with it.

I completely agree. They're scum and deserve to die.

Does this extend to either minor (two underage types) or one-off (drunken flashers or something), who can all be placed on the sex offenders register in most countries, and in the US, can be mistaken for more serious offenders by certain websites/orgs that use Megan's Law extensively ?

It is, as far as I understand, a US law that allows anyone to view details of residency of anyone on sex offender's registers, regardless of their actual crime.

It perpetuates the myth of the predator class. Offenders roaming the street. When the majority of sexual assaults are commited by people you know, and people with no history. Most pedophiles for example are family or extended family members, not the fictional predator class.
Keep the masses in fear of random crime, and they will offer up their freedom to their rulers.

First off, I agree with t wolves, with the notation that I believe the age of consent should be lowered to 16.
Sad to say I do know someone on the Megan site in Ohio, where he moved to and where he did the deed.
To answer some of these questions:
1. As I believe in capital punishment for these bastards, I really have no sympathy for them in any other regard.
2. Re: the flasher versus other, all sites designate whether it was a felony versus misdemeanor offense. A misdemeanor is spank ass, or grab tittie, or flashing your willie, or whatever. A felony (as in the case of one of my childhood friends) meant that there was penatration of a part of someone's body with a part of another person's body.
Both types are listed and it makes sense to distinguish one from the other.
To answer the next obvious question, none of us saw if coming (no pun please) about our friend, I mean. But we only knew him up to 5th grade. No danger signs, not that I'm an expert in what they might be anyway.

There's been a law like that on the books in Washington State for years. Several people who did their time, got treatment and were released wound up reoffending-in non-sexual ways- and got sent back to prison because people were threatening them.
In specific, my brother's best friend is doing an 8.5-12 stretch in Walla Walla State maximum security penitentary because some overly-paranoid asshole threw a brick through his window, hitting his 2-year-old nephew in the head and freaking his sister out to high hell. He ran out of the house and beat the living shit out of the guy, a local evangelical pastor. When the cops showed up, all they saw was a bloddied man and this guy so angry they had to tazer him, with three guns, before he went down. Agravated assault 2, recomended for the max, and available for parole in 2 more years, all because some fuck-tard thought he was doing the state a favor by putting these names up on the internet.
