A march against internment in Derry was declared illegal by the British government, but the march went ahead on January 30, 1972 nonetheless. The British Paratroop Regiment opened fire on the marchers and murdered 14 of them.
The British government immediately opened a tribunal under Lord Widgery, which whitewashed the events. The leading British soldiers involved were all commended by the Queen.

There were also two films made last year to commemorate the 30th anniversary. I'm sure that at least one of them is available on video/DVD.

The shooting was indiscriminate and it is believed that British soldiers placed pipe bombs on dead civilians as young as 17.
The James Nesbitt film was the best;)

Yep its true the Paras fucked up and fired on an unarmed crowd. They should have been shooting at the IRA gun men located in the buildings. Whether they knew that they were not in the crowd or not, they decided to fire at the crowd of innocent civillians any way.

There is no doubt as to the wrong doing of the para's. But to deny the fact that there were gunmen in the near by buildings if equily stupid as saying that the Para's were right to shoot the civillians.

There was about one IRA sniper, I'm not sure if he was killed or not.

The police shot into Divis towers in the "belief" that there were republican gunmen inside. One went into the Rooney's house and struck Patrick.
