Getting at the Truth

While of course the only real way to understand something is through experience, thats rarely possible when debating global issues and even the local ones outside my scope.

I'd like to hear everyone's methods of extracting truth from fiction, and not just from Corporate media outlets. Historians are certainly the biggest culprits of distortion. Its a total minefield of discounting obvious bull and yet treating similar propaganda from those closer to our own beliefs as gospel.

Has anyone any general rules of thumb about dissecting from all media and intellectual outlets?

Just don't listen to the media at all, and use the Internet if possible, as that will provide what's really going on in the world if you look in the right places, i.e. leftist sites.
