Progressive Unionism.
Notes from a talk by Mark Muller.
* The principle is developing democratic, rank and file organisation
* Workers must be actively involved
* We need to develop leadership
* To make the union an organisation of workers, not one that is run by a small circle of top officials in the service of the Labour Party
* A culture of thinking about workers rights
* Being prepared to take on new challenges, keep up the struggle – the boss never stops.
* Militantly fighting for workers rights
* Being willing to break the law (with illegal strikes etc) and not accepting the restrictions put on us
* But being aware of the power of the state and its viciousness
* Preparing for their attacks
* Ensuring that union funds can’t be got at by the state through a massive damages claim
* Fostering internationalism
* Opposing NZ nationalism
* Opposing discrimination against women, youth, and minorities.
* Sticking to the principle that an injury to one is an injury to all
