I just completed a 10-minute oral presentation today on the Israel-Palestine issue today. Thought I might post it here, because it might have some interesting information.

Feel free to discuss it, criticise, etc, but please realise I won't be defending it, as it is very general, having only been just after 10 minutes, and plus when it comes to anything in English, sometimes you have to say something just to say it.

I also didn't stick word-to-word with what I wrote, and there may be some spelling errors and mistakes.

I handed out 2 handouts with it to my audience - a list of Israel resolutions and USA vetoes of resolutions critical of Israel, and a UN parititioning map, and a map of Palestine, showing israeli settlements and occupied area at present. I will provide the list of UN resolutions, but won't provide the maps.

=========================

Hello. Today I will be arguing for the removal of Israeli forces in the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands and Syria, back inside the UN border set aside for the Israel State in 1948. The Israel-Palestine conflict s one that continues today, but it has a long history.
It has now been over half a century since the creation of Israel, its history plagued by war. Despite military resistance by neighbouring Arab nations and the Palestinian people the State of Israel has come out on top. They have broken dozens of UN resolutions, been involved in the murder of innocent civilians, and acts of aggression outside their borders.
Although it is necessary to have protection for the world’s Jewish population who live in Israel, acts of war and the oppression of the Palestinian people should not be on Israel’s agenda. Successive Israeli governments have not been the only ones at fault, however, they have caused and participated in many war crimes which I will speak of in more detail later.
The Israel-Palestine issue has been a complex one, and so it is necessary to travel through the history of the conflict, even from before 1948, up to the present.

In biblical time, in 1300 BC, it is said that the migration and conquest of the land of Canaan by the Philistines and the Israelite tribes. Later on in 1000 BC, it is claimed that the Jewish people took control of Jerusalem, under the reign of David.
Zionist leaders claimed to have a right to Palestine on these ‘facts’, although scholars refuse to acknowledge this, saying that it is not true (Zionism being the ideology of creating a Jewish state in the Jew’s ancestral homeland).

Since then, however, this area of the world has been ravaged by war, and came under the ruling of many different imperialist powers.
On Nov 2, 1917, the British issued the Balfour Declaration, after negotiations with Zionist leader Haim Weizmann with the view by Jews and Arabs as promising a “National Home” for the Jews in Palestine. The British overthrew the Turkish Ottoman Empire and occupied the territory themselves.
They saw Palestine as a post for guarding the Suez Canal in Egypt, where they had interests at that time. The Arabs had a good relationship with Germany (the enemy of Britain in the Great War) at that time. Britain felt that with the creation of a Jewish state, it would help to expand their power over the Middle East.

This was the start of what would be the regrettable interference in the affairs and the interests of peace by modern super powers, who should not have been there to start with. This action caused great unrest among the neighbouring Arab nations. The British military quelled any uprisings throughout this era.

On May 15, 1948, the declaration of the Jewish State of Israel was announced. The process of independence was speeded up, after the oppression of Jews in Europe by Nazi Germany, and other European countries. Britain left Palestine since they couldn’t afford their activities in the region anymore, and this was another reason why the process was sped up. The creation of the state was rejected by the Arab League, however. Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia declared war on Israel the very next day.

On April 3, 1949, after the Israeli war of independence, Israel and the opposing Arab states agreed to an armistice, after Israeli victory on the battlefield. Israel gained about 50% more territory than was originally allotted to it by the UN Partition Plan. The war created over 780,000 Palestinian refugees who fled or were evicted from Jewish held areas. Gaza fell under the jurisdiction of Egypt. The West Bank (Strip of land adjoining Jordan, which is supposed to be a part of Palestine) was occupied by Jordan and later annexed by Israel.

At this time, Israel first showed signs of disregarding resolutions that were set by the UN, which in effect violated international law. Between 1955 and 1992 alone, Israel violated 65 UN resolutions!*

Israel has had the chance to show the world and its Arab neighbours its concern for the safety of both the Jewish and Palestinian people. Instead, they became aggressors. Then Israeli Prime Minister, Ben Gurion, said in internal Zionist negotiations before creation of Israel, that he had ambitions to take the whole of Palestine, despite UN partitioning.
In fact, it was fellow Zionist and future Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir (who was leader between 1986 and 1992) who said in 1943 that terrorism must be used as a means to uphold national honour. “Neither Jewish morality nor Jewish tradition can be used to disallow terror as a means of war... We are very far from any moral hesitations when concerned with the national struggle. First and foremost, terror is for us a part of the political war appropriate for the circumstances of today...”
— Yitzhak Shamir in an August 1943 article titled “Terror”.

In 1967, Israel occupied Sinai in Egypt, motivated by the fact that Egypt may use newly acquired Soviet arms. Egypt closed the straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping and dismissed the UN peacekeeping force that had been there since 1956.
On June 5-11,1967, the 6-day war took place. Israel destroyed the Egyptian air force on the ground, occupied Sinai and Gaza, then further occupied the West Bank in Jordan, and the Golan Heights in Syria. UN resolution 242 called for Israeli withdrawal, and an establishment of peace.

This was the year when the United States of America increased their aid to Israel dramatically and by 1976, they were the largest annual recipient of the US, totaling $US81.3 billion. This so-called aid has since been used for the purchase of chemical, biological and even nuclear weapons. The act of buying nuclear weapons itself is a deplorable act that can only be seen as an intention to continue their acts of aggression. Israel remains one of the very few nations to have not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Despite this, the USA has used their veto powers in the UN to veto 30 resolutions that were critical of Israel, and hindering any peace deals that may have involved the demand that Israel is disarmed.

On June 6, 1982, a massive Israeli invasion of Lebanon was initiated to fight the PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organisation). UN Security Council Resolution 509 demanded that Israel withdraw all its military forces forthwith, but Israel advances rapidly to Beirut, surrounding the capital by 13 Jun. Despite wanting to eliminate this terrorist group, it became an infamous event where the slaughter of innocent civilians took place.

In Sept. 13, 1993, Oslo Declaration was agreed to by Israel and the PLO, to mutually recognise both parties. Yasser Arafat and PLO were allowed to return to Gaza. PLO and the Palestinian leadership renounced violence and use of terrorism, and agreed to revise the PLO charter to remove chapters referring to destruction of Israel, although this was never done. They changed their name to the Palestinian National Authority. Israel did not dismantle any settlements in the Palestinian areas, however, and the number of settlers and new settlements increased considerably.

In Sept. 28, 2000, Palestinians initiated riots after Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount, which is also the location of the Haram as Sharif, which is holy to Muslims. Violence escalated rapidly from rock throwing to machine gun and mortar fire, suicide bombings and lethal road ambushes, including some incidents instigated by settlers against Palestinians. Israeli army killed 15 Israeli Arabs in riots in September/October 2000, and over 2,000 Palestinians in retaliatory raids thereafter. The Palestinians killed over 700 Israelis. Violence continues to the present day.

The state of Israel may have sounded like a good idea, but when looking into its history, the reality is that the creation of Israel was not so innocent. While it was probably necessary for a state to protect oppressed Jews of the world, there is definitely no excuse for taking away the homes and livelihood of so many Palestinian people. Israel’s actions and continued aggression has caused anger and resentment amongst Arab people. This has allowed extremist Muslim groups to prosper and gain followers throughout the Middle East. These groups have directed their hatred towards the West, especially the United States, because of the support of Israel and interference in the Middle East. Leaders such as Bin laden and terrorist groups have turned the struggle of the Palestinian people into a ‘holy war’.
This ‘war’ has spread throughout the world with bombings, hijackings and suicide bombing. Israel should withdraw back to the original 1948 UN borders, help rebuild Palestine, and discontinue their act of aggression, to give some real meaning to the peace talks.

Thankyou for listening.

Well done Comrade a excellent peice you did there and I hope your class paid attention and learn't something. You did well in not falling into the trap of expressing your view to much, which I presume is left-wing. You just stated the Facts and gave your intepretation of them.

Well done.

Great work! I was just wondering, what was the teacher's and students' comments on these?

Were they against you?

Nice piece of work, NN. That list of UN resolutions and U.S. vetoes is particularly damning. :o

The irony of the Balfour Declaration is that the Jews who settled Palestine in the 19th and 20th centuries are not in any way "descended" from the ancient Hebrews who lived there two thousand years ago. This is an Israeli "national myth" that no reputable scholar would entertain for a minute.

But mythology is useful as we all know.

Another UN resolution that should be remembered: the one after the 1948 war that called on Israel to allow the Palestinian refugees to return. The Israeli government categorically refuses to even consider this.

I think it's important because it's a basic human rights issue. People have the right to live in the country of their birth. Not to be expelled from in, or to be prevented from returning if they've left. This is recognized by the UN Declaration of Human Rights, and by almost everyone, really, except when it comes to Israel.

Sometimes the Israel-Palestine issue can seem like it's just about borders or land, but at bottom IMO it is about human rights, and the refugees' right to return brings this to the surface.

Regardless of disagreements over this state or that state, nothing can justify violently driving people from their homes, villages, farms, olive tree orchards, which they and their parents and grandparents and so forth built and grew over centuries. "Ethnic cleansing" it was called in Yugoslavia, but when Israel did it it was forgotten.

It was received well.
