It depends what you want to do. You can use gutta to draw designs and use a water-based dye to fill it in. Or make stencils and print them. Or screen print designs. Or plain dye it. Even tie dye :D it's cute if you use different colours and shapes. You could spray or squirt on dye. Fluro 3D paints are cute if you squirt them on randomly, very 80's

im trying to make a black shirt with a cool anti-capitalist stencil design on it.

Is the shirt already black? If it is you'll need to silkscreen- it's the only method that will give you a nice bright contrast to the black. White is definitely the best colour, but other bright colours (like hot pink or yellow) would show up well.

You can try to stencil with just acetate, but it tends to not show up as well as silkscreening- the colour won't be 100% opaque. But screens are expensive, so I'd recommend seeing if you could borrow a blank screen from someone and tape your acetate to the bottom. You can apply the paint, and it will look just as good as a silkscreen, minus the expense.

You can get a paint with latex from art shops. You apply it, let it dry and iron it to fix the latex. You can also buy screens there too, if you're up for the investment.

If you need to dye the Tshirt before you stencil it you can buy fabric dye from places that sell craft supplies (leaning towards material and haberdashery)- not sure if art shops would necessarily have them.

Hope that made sense. :P

I've used white fabric markers on black t-shirts.
