What is your opinion on Omar Torrijos?

all i know about torrijos comes from John Perkin's confessions of an economic hitman. he seemed ok, but the book didnt really say anything about whether he was democraticaly elected or not.

Torrijos was a military dictator who overthrew the elected Panameņista government. There were elections, but these were for puppet presidents controlled by Torrijos himself.

Well, even though his successor Noriega completely f*cked up the country, his social democratic party is still the largest and most popular. He was the first to institute social security in Panama, and quite loved by the poors.

Yes, he was an anti-communist, but he was some form of populist in the same time.
