No! I'm not going to jump into whatever someone says haha. But let me rephrase my question.
I was in college for Business and Marketing, after having a breakdown I took off some time from school. going back next year. Now let me tell you I've never really read any books for self knowledge or to educate my self that wasn't an assigment by a teacher. But I find my self spending countless hours a week reading books and stuff on the web, researching, taking notes and looking up some of the words. I do this all on my own because It interest me a lot and I want to be able to fully understand it and eventually write my own works and what not. I read about Free Trade, Socialism, Marx, I mean that kind of stuff. What do you guys think is the best option in college if that's my interest?

Shit is that the only thing i'll be able to do with my Sociology degree?

I personally want to take Sociology so I can pursue a career in non-profits. Its actually a trip because most of the people i could make connects in that feild at this point are all religious and I'm kind of being pushed to go into religious non-profits (something I am not about to do)

Yeah that. What you've described makes it sound like you might enjoy Development Studies- IF (and only if) your uni has good teachers. If it doesn't you'll end up hating the subject, like I did.

Arts degrees are GREAT for learning about the world and for changing the way you think- which I don't think you get from another degree...

Anyway, good to hear you dropped out of marketing. *shudder*

"Usually when you ask somebody in college why they are there, they'll tell you it's to get an education. The truth of it is, they are there to get the degree so that they can get ahead in the rat race. Too many college radicals are two-timing punks. The only reason you should be in college is to destroy it."

Probably one of the most idiotic things I've read on this site. Typical anarchist ranting

I can't wait until after the revolution you seem to support.

"Hey dudes, we're out of medicine."
"Er...none of us have a higher education....fuck, how the hell are we going to make more medicine?"

And many other such fun adventures.

Not really. It's just an anti-college rant. Nothing to do with anarchism per se. Hoffman wasn't an anarchist.

Although I do rather agree with his last sentence. That's what we spend a lot of time doing.

It doesn't really sound like a revolution. More like one big destructive derby.

You spend a lot of time trying to destroy colleges? Why would you want to destroy the educative institutions of society?

Knowledge is scary. It might lead to something like the big bad monster of technology, or *bakunin forbid* a greater understanding of our world.

No, that's not at all what I mean. (And there's no need to be a jackass. I've never expressed any sympathy for primitivism, you're talking to the wrong guy.)

"College" as an exclusionary concept is incredibly anti-democratic. The fact that some people who have the privilege and luck to get into college do so while the majority can't is unfair and absurd.

For instance, students at my college have begun an "experimental college," where we offer only free classes that are open to the public. We're also getting involved in the larger Tent State protest across the country, which has, as one of its stated goals, the abolition of tuition for university.

I love learning. I just wish it wasn't in such a formalized atmosphere that leads to stratification, boredom, and ultimately apathy.

Thats probably one of the last things someone in college would want to do. If you go to be an officer in the Army/or really any other branch of the service you still have to go through boot camp and theres still the possibility that you'd get sent to Iraq <_<. Not really my/or anyone else with a brain's idea of a good experience.

I think I'm gonna go to school for Cultural Anthropology or maybe Urban Planning. But as for you, do whatever interests you. College should be for learning, not conditioning for a slot in an irrational economy.

I study cultural anthropology sort of. Do they have any good anthorpology universities in cyberia?

Yes, you should study something you are interested and useful, for yourself and perhaps even your progressive aims. If you end up studing something you are not interested in and has not meaning for you will probably become frustrated and depressed.

Whatever you do at college do it HARD! You pay a lot so take everything you can out of that place. My college had a great library and a lot of free resources to use that I couldn't get anywhere else. We also had a lot of great teachers. You may not agree with them, but you find that they love to talk. Go talk to them, you can learn a lot. Whatever you do don't just go to classes and half ass everything. Its a fucking waste of time. Don't let them use you, use them; for every penny you paid. Start clubs, argue with people, get people pissed and rowdy. As a great man once said, "if anything is worth doing, its worth doing right" © Dr. Thompson. Do it HARD!
Also there's a lot to do with a Poly Sci degree, its probably the most versatile. And if you're already spending your time doing that you might as well major in it. I did the same (switched from pre-med to poly sci second year) and couldn't be happier.
