you can "diy" an ipod by converting cheap USB pen drives into mp3 players.

No you cannot. Everything stored in a pen drive requires a power source to read, as well as being dockable with a NTFS or FAT32 configured system.

Unless your idea is putting a flash drive in a laptop, there isn&#39;t any way unless you buy a pre-configured one.

I&#39;m thinking of getting an iRiver, which can hold 5gb and costs 80 pounds (about US&#036;151) - I did have a creative Zen but it broke after about 2 months.

I would get an iPod but y&#39;know, the whole corporation thing stands out a bit too much. Add to that the fact that they stole the technology from iRiver...

I would lose that straight way. I had the same mobile for about 4 years. Upgrading , lost it in a month, damm slim trendy things falling out my pocket..
