Unity Day Generating Division and Defiance

People's Unity Day seems to have done anything but promote unity.

At least five cities, including Moscow, have banned anti-immigration marches, ultranationalists are vowing to march anyway, and Moscow City Hall -- in a rare departure from tradition -- will not splash out money for celebrations Saturday.

When the country marked People's Unity Day for the first time last year, President Vladimir Putin touted the holiday as an opportunity to celebrate the solidarity of all Russians.

Senior pro-Kremlin politicians on Thursday urged police to crack down on anyone who ignored the municipal bans. "Law enforcement bodies should pay special attention to such provocations," State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov said. Several nationalist Duma deputies have pledged to participate in a Moscow march.

Police should act "as harshly as needed, considering the possible dangerous consequences," said Vladimir Vasilyev, chairman of the Duma's Security Committee.

The Movement Against Illegal Immigration and several other ultranationalist groups insisted Thursday that they would march despite the bans. "They ban it, but I allow it," said Alexander Belov, head of the Movement Against Illegal Migrants.

Moscow City Hall spokeswoman Galina Sugak said law required march organizers to notify the Mayor's Office, not to obtain permission. Still, Mayor Yury Luzhkov has banned the march.

Marches were also banned by authorities in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnoyarsk and Chita.

Up to 5,000 ultranationalists marched in central Moscow on Nov. 4 last year. Some carried signs with swastikas, and shouted "Heil Hitler."

This year, the ultranationalists are split. Those who support the Russian Orthodox faith will meet on Slavyanskaya Ploshchad for a rally authorized by the authorities. The others, whose march was banned by Luzhkov, plan to gather in the Komsomolskaya metro station and head to an undisclosed location to march.

The Russian Anti-Fascist Front, which is comprised of human rights and civil liberties organizations, said Thursday that it would hold a rally at 2 p.m. at Bolotnaya Ploshchad.

The City Hall spokeswoman said Moscow had no plans for any events, an unusual shift from Luzhkov's habit of celebrating public holidays with expensive extravaganzas. A Kremlin spokeswoman could not say whether Putin planned to address the nation or do anything special for the holiday.

People's Unity Day is supposed to commemorate the liberation of the Moscow princedom from Polish invaders in 1612. The holiday replaced another national holiday, the anniversary of the 1917 Revolution that was celebrated on Nov. 7.

I think it'll be interesting to see what exactly happens... The nazis wont sit back and take this, it could all kick off. Though, thats perhaps a bit farfetched, there will undoubtably be a bit of unrest...

Watch this space I guess.

Good find.

Putin doesn't actually care. He blames violence on 'ethnic gangs', not the fascists. The Russian oligarchy is keen to use this rise in extremism to their advantage. Soon they'll be talking about a new Russian empire, and it's all downhill from there.

Not necessarily, if the left can get back on it's feet anything is possible. In fact, the left is recovering, and has been holding more and more unhindered marches, which are gowing in numbers slightly.

It's not much, and these marches consist of about 60 people, but it's something. Locally, we're considering doing benefit gigs for our struggling comrades.

I will be keeping a close eye on these developments, but may need to assisstance of someone who is fluent in Russian, for mine is only minimal.

The sad thing is in this development only very few Russian citizens give a damn about the whole situation with these Aryan wannabe's beating up so called non Aryan's. Didnt Hitler say Slavs are untermenschen........

As expected those fascist bastards are going ahead with their march, and Moscow is moving to stop them. This should get interesting.

I first of all want to thank all counter demonstrators, which turned up to tell these confused kids that fascism has no place in Russia. I especially want to thank our comrades in Sankt Petersburg who openly clashed with these boneheads. I hope they gave them a happy ass kicking for 4th of Nov. And lastly I think the Russian government deserves some credit for not turning a blind eye as usual.

the gov. could use this to crack down on leftists too. it would be better to just let the fascists march. it'll energize and motivate them even more if you try to stifle them.

I'm afraid the Russian neo-Nazis are simply to powerful, and gaining power too quickly, to be ignored. I saw something about the situation on Sky the other day, and quite frankly it's terrifying. All these guys do is meet up, body build, practice street fighting and fill each other's heads with sick racist ideas. Then they go out in groups of up to 20 people, roam the streets, and openly and publicly kick the living shit out of some poor defenseless ethnic minority, chosen at random (or often the first one they see). The victim often dies, and no action is taken against the neo-Nazis.

Putin loves nationalists. He supports Dugin and the Eurasianists.

I am totally confused about Putin at times I find him to be a fascist in disguise, and other times I find his policies of re-nationalistation and his rhetoric during speeches, could make him the man to bring the great Russian nation back on track.

As to Putin loving the nationalists I dont know, but I have seen a documentary on Russian nazi's and after a day of their training sessions they ended up burning a portrait of Putin and making nazi salutes while shouting Putin kaput. (It was the German tv station ZDF).
