The U.S. to install a major military facility on Dominican soil
Santo Domingo.- The United States Southern Command will install a ‘Joint Military Operations Center’ in the Dominican Republic, to train special military police units of both nations.
The information, published by the news site Clave Digital, is contained in a document released by the Dominican Armed Forces Public Relations Department, which explains that Southern Command chief vice-admiral James Stravidis communicated that the center will be used for peacetime and humanitarian assistant operations.
"it will be equipped with modern technological resources, in addition to the training of units specialized in handling natural resources, military police and other activities related to threats that the country currently has," states the document.
However, the Armed Forces has not explained where the mentioned American military center would be built, nor what dangers threaten the Dominican territory.
The U.S. military’s proposal was presented to minister of the Armed Forces general lieutenant Ramon Antonio Aquino, in an meeting during the inaugural ceremony of the present head of the Southern Command’s, held in Florida, last October 19.
Though the proposal to create the Joint Military Operations Center between the United States and Dominican militaries dates from October 19, it was not until yesterday Wednesday when the official information was made public.
"The Southern Commando has its headquarters in Miami, United States, and its operational range is of 15.6 million square miles, encompassing 12 Caribbean nations and another 19 in Central and South America and supervises from the North American Naval Base at Guantanamo, in Cuban territory,” says the communiqué.
It adds that general Aquino, “took advantage of his stay in Miami, to maintain informal meetings with both commanders who were relieved, who in that same week (mid October) were considering increasing the efforts to collaborate with the Dominican Republic, in topics as the operations of peace and humanitarian assistance, in the conformation of a Joint Operations Center," it said.
Vice-admiral James Stravidis relieved Army general Bantz J. Craddock in those functions, becoming the Pentagon’s Commander of Operations within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) framework.
Aquino also spoke with senior U.S. officials about the creation, next January, of the Specialized Land Frontier Security Corps (CESFRONT), as one of the Dominican Armed Forces’ main short term goals.
