Hello my graphical friends, just like to make a lil' request,

Can people, where possible, please use thumbnails when posting images?

It's up for you to use your judgement, but generally once images start getting bigger than 600x600 (pulled that out of my arse), could you please consider using a thumbnail or link instead of postin the full image?

Obviously i'm not gonna give people warnings or anything for not doin' this, but it will make life easier for me, coz if you don't use a thumbnail (and i think your image is 'too big'), i'll upload it and post the thumbnail myself (already started doin' this in the stencils thread). So if you find thumbnails edited into your posts, that was me :P
So either way thumbnails are the future  Just a question of how much work you want me to do

Two sites (if anyone you of others, please let me know) that provide ready-to-use thumbnails are:

http://imageshack.us/
http://imagevenue.com/

Once you've uploaded an image to either of these sites they give you a link specifically to use on web forums, so please make the effort to use it. :)

Why?

Well for a couple of reasons

-Save bandwidth for everyone
-Save loading time for everyone (particularly for comrades on dial-up).

In image heavy threads like the pinned stencil thread a whole page of 700x700 + size images can kill slow computers and connections.

So to make things easier and quicker for everybody, from now on, can people please please make some effort to use thumbnails when posting images?

Thank you :)

Comments/questions/criticisms welcome!

You have a 600x600 pixel arse?

As i said, i pull things out of my arse, my arse itself may or may not be 600x600 pixels, it's been a while since i've scanned it :P

I see where you're coming from - on broadband with a high resolution on my screen I dont really notice when images are 'too big'... unless they REALLY take the cake...

600x600 sounds about reasonable but since it's such a cliche why not 800x600? that way really small wallpapers are still ok... do many people have a res below 1024x768 now?

Well people don't have to use thumbnails, if they don't and i think their image is too big i'll thumbnail it myself :P I'm more trying to encourage a culture of thumbnailing big (gettin over round 600), than any saying 'you must thumbnail any image over X size or you'll get in trouble!'. If people thumbnail their images great! Less work for me, if they don't, i can do it myself, only takes a few moments :)

So in a more succint response, if you want to thumbnail your images over 800x600 go for it, but IMO that is big enough to warrant a thumbnail.

Given that normally when there is one 800x600 there's probably another 5 floating around on the same page, 5 images of that size add up (critical mass), that really goes to the core of this proposal - in this forum we have lots of image-heavy threads, while singular posts of big images can be handled (though again i would encourage people to use thumbnails), it is a different story when multiple posts have big images, all on the same page etc.

You feel me? :D

I'm half tempted to go back through my last post in the tshirt thread and dethumb it just to put you to work as the mod of this forum... :P
