Has anyone here heard of Lightning Bolt? They're an insane instrumental two-piece, with just a bassist and a drummer and some of the most original music I've heard in my entire life.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=n5CYppO83Xg <---one of their best songs. It's called "Ride the Sky". If you get a chance to download it I highly recommend it.

i saw lightning bolt back in 2001 or 2002. they really are a great band that is exploring different avenues. they are affiliated with the noise rock scene. they used to have a 3rd member of the band that went on to become part of Black Dice. but i dunno, they just seem different than your typical noise--more tribal and rhythmic.

their bass player gets those weird sounds by using a combination of bass and banjo strings on his guitar, while using a fucking INSANE amp setup. they have a DVD out called something like "the power of salad" that is really fun to watch. (my friends band played with them years ago and the flyer to that show is on the end of the dvd!). the crowd response is always great. they never play on stages. instead they will just set up randomly in the middle of a room and have everybody come around them.

if you like them, you should think about checking out Pink and Brown and USA is a Monster, both 2-pieces out of the northeast.

Brian G. Has a MM Stingray, 2 boss distortion units, a boss octive, a line 6 delay, and a bass whammy, and also sometimes a bass wah.

For amps Brian G. Uses an ampegsvt4 and random other bass amps/power amps,

Cabs, Brian G. seems to use used or random 1x18's(2) and also 4x10's(2), Brian C. has a 1x18, a 4x12 and two pa speakers that I think came with the mixer.

Alternate Tunings.
Gibson's bass is obviously alternately tuned wikipedia said "It's tuned to cello standard tuning (fifths) with a banjo string for the high A) ".

His exact signal chain is:

Digitech Bass Whammy -> Boss OC-2 -> Boss ODB-3 -> Boss SD-1 -> Line 6 DL4

Afaik the DL4 is a looper as well as a delay unit

Anyone interested in Lightning Bolt should also check out Duracell, an insane one-man drum/synth band that plays video game songs and Lightning Bolt covers.
