I'm going to enlighten you all about the best Aussie Punk.

Let's start with Draft Dodger. Brisbane band just broke up about a month ago, Neil from Bjelke-Petersen youth was lead vocals. He's gone on to form a new band with the drummer from The Wastas, a ska unit that broke up two months ago, and Michael from Shortstraw Warfare, that broke up last week. DD is sounds like Poison Idea and Motorhead, real fast angry shit. Get their Guantanamo Bay 7" from Endless Blockades with their last CD- Modern Martyr- has Schapelle Corby on the cover- nice one.

Depression was around in the 80's, fronted by Smeer, who also drummed for Gash. This is Smeer-

Fucking awesome band, check out 'Australia, Australia' LP.

Gash was another awesome band- slow fucking crusty shit, covers all sorts of issues. Really good- especially the Positive Change record in my opinion. Fronted by Liz, with Smeer from Depression on drums.

I spit on Your Gravy was a laugh- front man Fred Negro's still at it today with a fucking huge cowboy hat- back in the day he was infamous for his infamous onstage erotic acts with frozen chickens. The band did its best to be ultra-anti-PC with songs about feeding kids heroin, shooting up anchovies, raping nuns and chainsaw massacres. Revered Fred Niles had their first album banned. Check em out and leave your Crass PC crap at the door.

Schifosi is an awesome crust band around the country right now- someone once said that this shit's only good for listening to if you're the last survivor of a nuclear war and you're alone in a moss covered log cabin in the middle of a foggy haunted forest. That's probably about right. Maximum Rock and Roll called it Tragedy worship- which proves MRR are poseurs.

Tofu crusty punk outfit Pisschrist is widely recognised as Australia's greatest band right now, although Scumsystemkill is fast challenging this. They've played right across Europe and once did a gig with the Japanese gods of grind, Unholy Grave. They do songs in Indonesian and English- mostly about smashing the system. I'm proud to say I was up there once singing Tofu Terror with them while all the poseurs were at a shitty Misfits gig up the road.

Nick Cave's quite popular in Germany now, doing a few songs with the legendary singer of Einsturzende Neubauten- on the other hand, he's also done one with Kylie Minogue. The Bad Seeds are okay. But nowhere near as good as his '80's band The Birthday Party- with records like Drunk on the Pope's Blood and Prayers on Fire, tBP is fucking brilliant. Beer spitting glue sniffing angry punk rock. Ignore the Hee-Haw album- tBP went the way Warsaw did (Warsaw turned into Joy Division)- the early stuff is where it's at though.

The Collapse from Perth are another crust punk band, fast and fucking angry. Also on Endless Blockades, check them out. Scumsystemkill is the next big thing- everyone is in awe of them nation-wide. Barbarian hordes will sweep through Canberra and leave none alive. Nuff said. Mutiny is a slow folk anarcho-punk band- not my style but immensely popular in the scene. Bewilderbomb in Brisbane's about to break up- check them out before it's too late.

I'm not going to cover the street punks- Steppin Razor, The Black Market, The Disables, Leopard Street Droogs, Doing It For the Money etc. all very well, but it's still crap. Sorry guys. I'd mention Charter 77, but I'm not sure what to make of them- while they are supposedly anarchists and were on a compilation for the Class War Federation, they played a few gigs with neo-Nazi band Blood Red Eagle. Maybe it was a mistake- but I'm going to find out about this. An hounourable mention goes to Cockjockey for coming up with the song "Don't Conform to Mowing Your Lawn".

But never forget Australia's greatest band ever- Old Dieareah- one of me best mate's Milo's band. Milo is Indian-Australian and is starting a white power band called Coco Pops with another Indian and a Samoan. They're going to cover Skrewriver songs in Indian. WHITE... ummmm.... Poweeer.... yeah. Hmm.

Thanks for the info. I'm not too familiar with Aussie punk. The only band I've heard was H-Block 101.

you guys named so many bands but you left out mutiny?!

That's because they're in the same vein as catgut mary and the go set. Folk Punk is something big and unique enough to have it's own section.
