one song i loved for its lyrics is "Justifiable Homicide" by Dying Fetus.

chances are, most of you wouldn't like it, it's pure death metal and the vocals are exceedingly gutteral; my cousin calls it a bullfrog growl.

but the lyrics are available here:

I did vocals in a death metal band, and we were a damn sight better than all the unoriginal shit on the underground scene at the moment.

thing about underground death metal... it almost always sucks - it's usually a low tech, off-beat rip-off of 'famous' death metal.

Lunar Dawn was one of the few original indieDeath bands that i've ever come across, and the only one that could hold a steady pace... if you have Ares or WinMX / LimeWire, I have 2 of their songs shared.

Fuck... I'm Dead is the best (my opinion) of the underground death, but it's hard to pay alot of respect to them: they use drum programming... and i don't know if they can still be considered underground - Audiogalaxy sponsored them before the RIAA shut them down, and they were one of the opening bands for the european and asian legs of Cryptopsy's tour a few years ago

i've noticed a trend among metal bands and metal heads... alot of us are leftists. it's relatively uncommon that you find fascist or conservative or other right wing bullshit in metal, excluding maybe a few black metal bands (such as emperor, immortal, mayhem, and burzum, in particular) who seem to idealise nazism and 'aryan supremacy' to an extent.

I don't mind melodic death metal (ie Children of Bodom), I can deal with that. But bands like Emperor and Cannibal Corpse piss me off.

I prefer your more traditional metal, stuff like hammerfall and iced earth.

I'm going to be super pedantic and take issue with the above post

Children Of Bodom are pop-metal. And crap.

Emperor
Black Metal

Cannibal Corpse piss me off
You know there's a deleted scene in an Ace Ventura film where Jim Carrey gets on stage at a CC gig and takes over vocal duties?

You can find it on Youtube.

Children Of Bodom are pop-metal.

Pop-metal?

1. that implies that pop music = bad. Not true.

2. That Children of Bodom are pop. Not true.

Well at least not compared to Slip Knot, Killswitch Engage, Metallica, etc, etc, etc.

Reallly? The metal gigs I've been to have had worrying numbers of white power types.

There was a guy in the crowd at CoF that had the SS sig-rune symbol on his arm, he walked past us when we were queuing up. Also there is someone on the CoF messageboard which I joined to ask a question once, and his avatar was a striked out hammer and sickle. It's not that they are a racist band, they have never mentioned anything like that in songs, it's just they are politically neutral so people of all ideologies have the potential to like them (except the Christian based ones etc. probably)

And Children of Bodom are amazing. For example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR_GDB67eKg). :D

thrash metal.

cannibal corpse is alright, but their music is too disogranised and typical of the death metal genre... but then again, they're usually considered the band that sets the standard of what newer (1990 on) death metal is...

as for emperor... same thing - too disorganised for my personal tastes, but that is a standard for what most consider 'real' black metal - the lack of organisation.

melodic death metal is the fucking schiz - 2 of my 3 favourite bands are melodic death - fleshcrawl and kataklysm.

brutal death metal is fucking sweet too... most of it anyway... dying fetus, fleshgrind, nile, skinless, etc... some of it is kind of irritating, especially suffocation.

but in general, i like most death metal... it's fast, intense, hardfuckingcore, and... there's some of the best musical talent employed by death metal bands.

children of bodom aren't pop metal... have you ever heard them on a mainstream radio station? mudvayne and disturbed are pop metal.

children of bodom are pretty good... their lead guitarist can do some bad ass solos... and you should try to find "solo battle" by children... it's like dueling banjos (in a way), but it's a three way battle between 2 electric guitars and a keyboard - pure badass.

there's always a few... but when i went to ozzfest last summer in detroit, i saw two skins get their fucking asses beat... real whoopcore style (i think one of them was hospitalised, but i'm not sure).

just about every metal show i've been to, i've been able to meet at least 1 other leftist and at least a couple of metalhead hippies.

Of all the bands in here, Cannibal Corpse is the one that sucks most ass (though their bassist is really good) and arenīt worthy of any kind of reference (except in sucking ass).

thrash metal.

What hammerfall and Iced earth? I would say that they are closer to power metal.

Everyone should listen to The Haunted- awesome, awesome thrash with some melodic elements, fantastic musicians (I mean, they are made up of remnants of At the Gates) and often-left-wing lyrics.

And yeah, there are quite a few leftish metal bands- but I think that there's a small but visible bunch of white power type fans who are too thick to pick up the message... I remember reading on an anarchist I know's blog about some Australian fascist who listed his favourite bands- and they were basically ALL leftwing metal bands who'd sooner kick his arse than have him at a gig... Stoopid fash...

I really like At The Gates (especially their debut album), so what albuns can you recommend by them?

The Haunted Made Me Do It, One Kill Wonder and rEVOLVEr are great albums. Their self-titled is a bit rawer and thrashier- still awesome. They've also got a new one coming out later.

power metal is of close kinship to thrash.

iced earth still reminds me alot of thrash though, especially neurosis and annihilation (i'm not quite sure why though... they each have somewhat distinct sounds)... but they all have that softer-end-of-thrash sound (as opposed to the heavier-end-of-thrash sound, like destruction and brainstorm)

if you haven't yet, you should give blind guardian and running wild a try... very good metal...

haunted is good... i especially like d.o.a. from one kill wonder...

the right-wing/fascist/nazi/white-supremacy fucks tend to be more hardcore punk oriented... but then again, that makes sense... isn't one of them that's anything more than a punk motherfucker
