View Full Version : 'The Boy'

Has anyone seen this book? I came across is about 4 months ago and have recently decided to adapt it into a pitch for a conceptual short film.

The book is basically a long essay where Greer in her own words attempts "...for women, to reclaim the short lived beauty of boys" argues that there is a specific aesthetic to boys that is particularly beautiful.

She maintains, quite thoroughly in my opinion, that this "mysterious" beauty has featured predominantly in art throughout history, being one of the most popular muses for artists. (She defines a boy as a male who is no longer a child but not yet a man).

It's a very interesting subject and its something I am particularly sympathetic to. There does seem to be this "aura" to a certain aesthetic in boys and that's something I'd be interested to investigate, especially in my film.

I think Socrates is one of the most famous people in history to have documented this aesthetic, and often wrote how this beauty could send him mad: "If there is anything in this world more beautiful than a boy, I have not seen it."

I've been meaning to get hold of the book actually (I think I'll be able to relate <.<)- but I've got soooo many books lying around waiting to be read...

And ooh, a film, exciting. :)

You think that it's sick to appreciate beauty? That's quite an odd assertion, even for you!

#1 She hates men.
#2 She claims men are the root of all evil when clearly it's capitalism.
#3 I'll read it because it's true that 'boys' are the most aesthetically pleasing.

This thread is not designed to debate Germaine Greer's feminism.

The book is not about boys being "pleasing", it's about a specific aesthetic which has captivated artists throughout history and which should be appreciated.

Whatever, I won't read it then.

This book was also a documentary film - which wasn’t half bad.

I have to say, Greer is quite and odd ball with some wacky ideas - like penile insertion into the vagina is inherently oppressive, she calls its nature's symbolism of dominance.

Really? Wow, that IS crazy.

 How is that relevant to the thread? (Not that what she said was stupid at ALL)

She said something you disagreed with- so you can dismiss everything she's ever said/done?

So did John Howard. Or maybe he said a lot of shrewd and politically expedient things?

Either way, Germaine Greer said something about Steve Irwin, doesn't change anything really. I picked up a copy of the book at a library and read the first 3 pages. I'de read more but I still have to get through.
