Radical Muslims in France's housing estates are waging an undeclared "intifada" against the police, with violent clashes injuring an average of 14 officers each day.

As the interior ministry said that nearly 2,500 officers had been wounded this year, a police union declared that its members were "in a state of civil war" with Muslims in the most depressed "banlieue" estates which are heavily populated by unemployed youths of north African origin.

It said the situation was so grave that it had asked the government to provide police with armoured cars to protect officers in the estates, which are becoming no-go zones.

The number of attacks has risen by a third in two years. Police representatives told the newspaper Le Figaro that the "taboo" of attacking officers on patrol has been broken.

Instead, officers – especially those patrolling in pairs or small groups – faced attacks as soon as they tried to arrest locals.

Michel Thoomis, the secretary general of the hardline Action Police trade union, has written to Mr Sarkozy warning of an "intifada" on the estates and demanding that officers be given armoured cars in the most dangerous areas.

He said yesterday: "We are in a state of civil war, orchestrated by radical Islamists. This is not a question of urban violence any more, it is an intifada, with stones and Molotov cocktails. You no longer see two or three youths confronting police, you see whole tower blocks emptying into the streets to set their 'comrades' free when they are arrested."

He added: "We need armoured vehicles and water cannon. They are the only things that can disperse crowds of hundreds of people who are trying to kill police and burn their vehicles."

However, Gerard Demarcq, of the largest police unions, Alliance, dismissed talk of an "intifada" as representing the views of only a minority.

Mr Demarcq said that the increased attacks on officers were proof that the policy of "retaking territory" from criminal gangs was working.

Islam is an invective among many Europeans and Americans. By tarring the rioters as Muslims, the ruling elite is able to use that as an excuse for the conditions they are responsible for placing the non white population in.

what?!

They were blaming it all on muslims with the big riots last year as well, which was bullshit, since black, white, whatever were fighting together.

As tecumseh said, by simply saying those "rebels" or whatever they are are muslims, they alienate that group, which rebels for a very good reason, with justice on their side, from the rest of the oppressed in france.

As leftists, we should work against this tactic of division, and try to achieve proletarian unity, not work with it.

Does this even have anything to do with religion? Or are the media just portraying it that way?

As far as i can tell, the only link to religion in this story is that the youth happen to be mostly (?) muslim, but yeah, they could be atheists, what is happening is not the result of any religious belief the people involved may or may not have.

I suspect that perhaps in france, like has happened in oz, the media uses terms like muslim, arabic, middle-eastern -> synonymously, each term meaning something like, 'troube-causing foreigner', which is in turn linked to the anti-immigation debate, the 'war on terror' etc.

Right; it's simply BS to say that ghetto unrest has much to do with "Islamic fundamentalism".

During the height of the banlieu rebellion, the main Muslim fundamentalist group in France, the UFIO, tried unsuccessfully to calm down the ghettos. They publicly agreed with the notorious, inflammatory statement by Interior Minister Sarkozy that the rioters were "scum".

About the article:
The "Action Police", besides being an organization of cops, are also tied to far-right parties like the Movement for France. Their statements should not be taken as a description of reality, only as an example of the agitation of the far right.

Now "the interior ministry said that nearly 2,500 officers had been wounded this year," that may mean something, especially if "The number of attacks has risen by a third in two years."

Yeah.. an FPM article pointed out the ridiculousness of people trying to equate the uprising with radical Islam.

"Corporate media throughout the world attempted to paint the rebels as religiously motivated Muslim extremists, even though the the Union of French Islamic Organizations issued a fatwa, or religious edict, forbidding “any Muslim seeking divine grace and satisfaction to participate in any action that blindly hits private or public property or could constitute an attack on someone’s life.” (Revolt of youth without religious motivation, Financial Times, November 8, 2005).

"Lhaj Thami Breze, who is chairman of the UFIO, even went as far as to agree with Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy's description of the young rebels as "scum"."

Here's the article: It's right to rebel! French youth show the way! (http://www.freepeoplesmovement.org/fpm/page.php?62)
