Well, I've been doing some reading, and it seems to me that the Iroquois were some of the first communists. I did some reading, and it pretty much was a utopia. It was communism at it's finest hour. well first off Land ownership was communal. The iroquois were assigned to live in houses, and they could stay there as long as they lived there and worked the land. The actual property and any other commodities served very little interest to the Iroquois. Food and produce was produced by combined means, and Starvation was rare among the tribes. Crime was rare among the tribes.

So what do you guys think?

Well depending when the Iriquois were around (1700ish im guessing) there has been forms of communism and things very close to it since the beggining of time.

As a Canadian, i feel a sense of gratitude towards the iroquoian people because they helped us during the american invasion of 1812 the iroquoian people acted as our special forces in our war of independance. the iroquoian people (the six nations... iroqouis, huron, mohawk etc.) were behind many of the advanced ideas in western societies, the american consitution is based on many of the six nations laws and writings, i dont know how communist they were but they did operate in a comunal manner.

Yeah, if the Americans had been successful we might be living under a conservative government entirely subserviant to Washington.

I wonder what that would be like!

Their system of communalism was primitive communism.

It was mainly Tecumseh's group who aided the British.

Most historians acknowledge that as a myth now.

Westerners didn't really understand Native American culture at all due to their Eurocentric viewpoints so it's doubtful that the Native's politics would've had much of an effect on the Framers since the Iroquois really didn't have much influence at all nor did the framers have much knowledge of their society.

Here's are an article about it.

Karl Marx and the Iroquois (http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/3909/misc/marxiroquois.html)

It doesn't talk all that much about the Iroquois, but it is still an interesting read.
