If you're not PISSED OFF, you're not paying attention!
"But what can I do?"
Pay attention and you'll notice the reality of the world we live in: rent hikes forcing you to flee the neighborhood you grew up in, dead-end jobs that leave you feeling miserable and unable to pay the bills no matter how many hours you work, no health coverage for yourself, your kids or your parents. Things you've long taken for granted, like healthy food and clean water are in short supply and mostly available to those who can afford the expensive gourmet shops that are buying out the corner bodegas. Even fresh air and a relatively stable climate are fading fast. Your tax dollars and depleted social services are helping to fund wars, yet your right to question the validity of those wars without punishment is quickly disappearing. It's a pretty bleak picture.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! Countless times throughout history, ordinary people have come together, taken matters into their own hands and improved their lives, with little help from the bosses and politicians who claim to have our interests in mind. The most rewarding and fair way to address social and economic problems is to do so collectively, not as isolated individuals in competition with one another. When you break it down, all the tough decisions that need to be made about how to live our lives and shape our world are ours to make, together. No one has the right to cut us out of that process.
But in order to assert our right to make those decisions and oppose those who would deny us that right, we need to organize ourselves, listen to one another, and begin practicing a fairer and happier way of life.
We are. We're revolutionaries. And we're organized.
You see, doing revolution takes time, effort, and PEOPLE. People like you. That’s why, every two months, the New York Metro Alliance of Anarchists (known to the über-hip cognoscenti as NYMAA) holds a General Assembly. At these General Assemblies, we gather together as many likeminded revolutionaries, anarchists, anti-authoritarians, "horizontalists", autonomists, etc, as we can, and we hang out in a big room for a few hours in order to deal with internal NYMAA issues, plan new projects and nurture ongoing projects, and get new people excited about working with us.
And, wonder of wonders, there’s a General Assembly coming up (our fifth) on Saturday, October 21st, and you’re invited.
Saturday, October 21; 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Sixth Street Community Center; 638 East 6th Street between Avenues B and C
For directions, and more information, please visit http://www.nymaa.org
Food and drink, as well as childcare, will be provided. In addition, there’s talk of a NYMAA AFTERPARTY to follow the General Assembly, with lots of salacious debauchery on tap. Good times!
But hey, what is a “NYMAA” anyway? Glad you asked. At the moment, our aim is to build momentum and create a movement of genuine resistance and liberation that is capable of confronting the brutality of all forms of authoritarianism, hierarchy, domination, and oppression. Our pet peeves are capitalism and the state. We are revolutionaries, after all. For even more info on what we’re about, feel free to check out http://www.nymaa.org.
See you there!
