How many of you believe that FDR knew about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor ahead of time, but did nothing so that he would have an excuse for war? What are your views on this issue?

there is no evidence available that would make such a belief anything more than conspiracy theory malarky, thus completely irrelavent to the study of history.

Actually, I remember hearing there was a book which concretely documents this. I can't remember.

I don't think there was anything concrete like the Gulf of Tonkin incident perhaps. However, there definitely was a forewarning to the attack but whether any actual warnings were blocked due to error or whether it was suppressed will never be truly known for sure.

As there were of Sept 11th. Its easy to look back at intelligence and say that X or Y should have been caught but in reality intelligence does not always work its way up to the top.
What that does not allow us to do is assume that the US President knew of the attacks and permitted them to go ahead due to some shadowy master plan. That's simply stupid and counter-productive. Marxists should deal in reality and not assume that any conspiracy theory that happens to make the US look bad is the truth.

I think what was proven about Pearl Harbor is that the intelligence agencies did have all the information necessary to predict that the Japanese were going but either they didn't bring that information together or just didn't tell to FDR. Yet, I really don't think anything would have changed even if they knew the attack in advance told FDR about it.

Of course because that would be a logical error. Anyways, you can't stop people from having these ideas but nor can you truly prove it one way or another.
