I just watched it then. Incredible.
Though i had little knowledge about the whole situation surrounding that time. Could anyone share some light on it for me?
what did you all think of it?

i love the film, and have had an interest in the rwandan genocide ever since i first heard about it. particularly bloody manifestation of colonialism, and the result of borders carved up by european colonisers who had little regard for indigenous communties and their customs.
i suggest wiki for a brief intro to it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rwandan_genocide
and i'll look up some more resources for you if you like :)

also wanted to add:
the reason i'm particularly interested in the rwandan genocide is because it's a case where rape was systematically used as a weapon in war. sexual assault is far, far from being uncommon in conflicts but in this situation, like during the bangladesh liberation war, if a wom*n wasn't raped it was rare and shocking. in bangladesh however, not only was rape used to demoralise the people but it was also used as a way to "cleanse" the bengali bloodline of "hindu bootlickers" (as communications between army officials exposed). in rwanda, HIV infected men specifically raped wom*n to transmit the infection, using it as a weapon.
part of this was because tutsi wom*n were seen as threats to the purity of hutu blood.
so not only were 800 000 - 1 million tutsis and moderate hutus massacred, the genocide is continuing, with thousands of wom*n and children dying of HIV/AIDs (if not already dead of them)

Hotel Rwanda was the movie that made me question everything.
I loved it, and was horrified at the same time.
Also RB, don't forget the 2 million displaced.

I've seen heaps of movies that i thought really got to me but nothing like Hotel Rwanda. I guess the worst part for me was the scene when the American forces i think came to just rescue the Western people who were stuck in the hotel.
And that scene with the captain on the UN forces in the bar. the "we think your dirt" scene.
Made me so angry that we actually let that happen. Our governments i mean. Shit that made me angry

There is a much better movie about the issue: "Sometimes in April". You won't be able to sleep for a few nights after watching it.

I love hotel rwanda and am glad it made it into maunstream movies even though most people watch it and are 'o my thats awful' than go back to doing whatever. the news camera guy said it best about how people even watch it in the news and really dont care. its terrible but the truth

Not to depreaciate the film; it was beuatifully done, very emotional. However, it didn't get into the historical factors which led to this incident. Also, as a Anglo-Kanadian MLMist, I have to criticise the white washing of Kanada yet again. It's a tired old cliched stereotyped that needs to be addressed especially by revolutionary leftists in the georgraphical area known as "Canada".

Hey thanks for the info on the background of the Rwanda incident on Wiki, Rioters Bloc. It was fucking incredible and has only made me want to know more about what happened and whats still happening, and why i was only able to find out much info about it through a left wing website. I still don't get why such attrocity isn't known enough through the western world. Thats why Hotel Rwanda did such a good job in bringing this sitatuion to light.
