Joomla (http://www.joomla.org/)
Anyone used this to build a website? I was thinking of making a website but I want to know how good or bad it is.

Someone recommended Joomla to me a couple of months ago but I'd already set up the blog in Nucleus (http://nucleuscms.org/) (see sig) and had it up and running for a while and couldn't be bothered to change the set up. In theory I suppose all that's necessary is to import the database via phpmyadmin but there's a bit of a risk that everything'll go pear-shaped. A shame because Joomla certainly looks infinitely extendable.
If you install it, let me know how it goes - I'd be interested to see how you get on. :)
Lancaster's alternative town site uses it. See here (http://www.lancasterukonline.net/).

I'd avoid Joomla, it looks great and is targetted towards businesses, but underneath, the admin end is horrible and very non-user friendly. takes ages to get anything done.
Have a look at Drupal.org. Drupal owns all other php/sql based CMSs :) so much easier to use and much more flexible.
At Anarchobase.com that's what we use, as well as aptgetanarchy.org. Joomla is just more trouble than it's worth, from a maintenance/controlling point of view
Sorry for the plug too :)

I was also looking for some input from fellow revleft'ers about the choice between Joomla or Drupal.
Our organisation is using joomla for the moment. But I'm going to be involved in the devolpment of some other new sites. But I'm thinking more in the direction of drupal in stead of Joomla. The reason why is not based upon my own experience (since I have none with both CMS' ) but upon what I've read on the net.
What I read is that Joomla is easier to start with ( it's also targeted (more) to people with few or no experience in IT ). Drupal is in the beginning more an effort in terms of getting to know the system, but once you know it, you have much more possibilities in customizing it or extending it with your one of orther peoples modules.
So I was interested in the experience of other comrades.

I have almost no experience with Drupal, but Joomla (both used to 1.0 and 1.5 systems) is in my experience pretty versatile. As far as I know the differences between the two are mainly subjective: a different approach on doing things. But I'm not aware that one is actually better or worse then the other in terms of capabilities.
Have you looked into Wordpress as a CMS by the way? While I had a pretty low opinion of it before, I've seen sites that look pretty impressive that use this system. I know that Wordpress is much more popular than either Joomla or Drupal, so it stands to reason it has a larger developer base aswell.

I'll probably get the same stuff done in both joomla or drupal I think. The difference is that drupal has a better reputation when you want to code your own modules. But I'll guess that these difference can only be distinguished by people who really want to do that.

No I haven't. Wordpress started out as a blog, but I indeed know that a lot people use it for more advanced sites as blogs. From time to time I visit some webdevelop-sites and I do notice Wordpress does get a lot of attention there as well. So it's probably also a good alternative. I'll guess I'll have to find it out for myself which one suits best for me. But I still tend more to Drupal then to Joomla, maybe with WP in between them. I'm just going to give them a serious try in this order I think...
