What if Franco and his Nationalists were defeated in the Spainish Civil War? What would have happened afterward?

Maybe Spain would have taken part in the Second World War, on the side of the Allies?
I think what would have happened would have been something similar to Cuba - a socialistic government being set up. I think modern day Spain if Franco hadn't won would be far more atheistic, outside of the EU, more socialist and possibly close to a communist society.

either the perpetuation of the bourgeois republic or a stalinist like government
both would have sucked

-A socialist Spain.
-German and Italian intervention proved to be weak, so France and Britain would be more eager to either intervene against them, or turn on "Bolshevism" towards the east and now also the south.
-Revival of communism in the rest of Europe.

i disagree with your second point. france had a socialist in power in the 30s, i believe his name was blum, and post-vichy france was very pro-communist given the amount of commies participating in the nazi resistance. it would be hard to justify a french intervention into any spanish socialist government.

This question is irrelevant as we cannot know the answer. We should stop playing what if games with history.

My view is that if Franco and the army was defeated, then there would ended up being a direct confrontation between the CNT, the leninist forces and the weak capitalist state. Looking at the situation and the strength of the CNT at the time, especially during 1936-1937, it is very possible that the CNT would have overwelmed both and established a syndicalist transition period to a real communist society. Sadly, this was not the case.

Yeah, but these questions have a habit of reminding us of what we need do to do and to make sure that the revolutionary situations that are going to happen in this century can
not be subverted and destroyed.

That's a nice dream I would personnaly like to beleve to be true, but what do you think British war ships were doing crusing around Barcelona in summer of 1936, during the CNT - PSUC conflict??

Well, if we assume that the Republicans won the Civil War, and all other things remain equal, then the Nazi army still rolls over France. That puts Hitler's forces on the Spanish border by 1940. In the real world, Germany didn't invade Spain, because Franco was an ally. If the Republic had won, however, I think its likely the Nazis would have invaded.
What would the effects of that have been?

The revolution in Spain is very unique. As for comparing it today we can take a few lessons. However, there is no USSR, there are no large fascist governments anymore. A revolution today would not become a new Spain.
hat would the effects of that have been?
A big pain in the ass for hitler. A well organized militant anti fascist proletariat is not something a fascist leader wants to deal with :P It would have just ended the war more quickly.
