I have some questions for people who are really into this type of music.

I listen to quite a bit of electronic music like Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Aphex Twin, 4 Strings, Armin Van Buren, Fatboy Slim, Benny Benassi, Ferry Corsten, Chemical Brothers, DJ Tiesto, DJ Shadow, Mirwais, Moby, Royksopp, etc.

My problem is that I don't really know how to differentiate between subgenres. How do you know if a group is house? I know what drum 'n bass is (Aphex Twin-type stuff) and trance I think is like Infected Mushroom? Could someone please help me with this, maybe even put all the artists I mentioned in their respective categories and explain why?

Thank you.

Can't answer your question because I like electronic industrial and gothic, not the mainstream stuff.

For example, VNV Nation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxFRFIssQDc)

Wow there! Aphex Twin is not drum 'n bass. Come to Daddy has indeed a drum 'n bass feeling, but Aphex Twin in general is more Acid. Infected Mushroom is Goa, another name for the Trance subgenre Psychadelic Trance.

Techno: Benny Benassi, DJ Tiësto

Goa: Infected Mushroom, Astrix

Acid: Aphex Twin

House: Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers

Moby: depends what period, he used to make techno but he's also made some dance

Röyksopp: Mostly dance, some house/electro influences

(Progressive) Trance: 4 strings

I don't know Ferry Corsten, Armin Van Buren or Mirwais, sorry. As for knowing how to differntiate, it's a matter of feeling really.
Hope that helps a bit.

It's always hard to assign an artist to 1 genre, but I think most tracks from The Chemical Brothers are Big Beat..
Aphex Twin is more IDM/Experimental but again, you can't assign an artist to 1 genre.. And defenetly not Aphex Twin :D

Jello: Discogs is a great source to find what kind of music a certain track is..

You are right, it is hard to assign an artist to one genre, but I was just trying to give a general feel. As for Aphex Twin, you can't pin him down on one genre indeed but it falls under Acid, generally. Acid being more of a meltpot (oh how I hate that word) of genres in itself, more than a specific genre.
