we had an action on wednesday, on "israeli day" (a day set up by a zionist club at uni to celebrate israel  )

anyways, here's a quick debrief on what happened:

they (awjs) were having a bbq on the concourse at uts, with their israeli flag and blue and white cupcakes with mini israeli flags stuck into them. four of us went up on to the concourse and mingled with the crowd there (people who were eating the bbq/waiting in line as well as other students hanging out on the couches). these were to be the "palestinians"

another four of us dressed up in identical army combat gear, complete with helmets and metal replica guns (which looked chillingly realistic). anyways, security found out what we were up to and told us that we couldn't go up onto the concourse. we chatted to them for a long time, told them that we weren't planning on being violent or stopping people from enjoying the bbq. there wasn't much they could do, it being a public university and all.

the four of us in idf gear walked up onto the concourse and started grabbing our "palestinian" friends out from the rest of the crowd, and dragged them to an open space near the bbq. we started to throw them around, kicking at them and calling them "arab filth" and "palestinian scum" etc. they resisted, yelling "no peace without freedom" and calling us dogs, but we subdued them with our brute military force of course, people stopped talking and watched us instead, during which time two other activists went around to everyone handing out leaflets containing information about Israeli atrocities, and leaflets on the anti-war teach-in tomorrow.

we gagged and blindfolded the "palestinians", and put the israeli flag over their bodies. then one of my fellow idf soldiers started to talk about how if people wanted to celebrate israel day, we wanted to show them what israel is actually about.. that what they had just seen played before them was the daily reality of so many palestinian lives. he was an awesome speaker.

some people from awjs started to speak too, and we had a bit of a debate but it was really confusing :S for example, i brought up the fact that many students studying in the gaza strip had to travel through three different countries to get back to the west bank to see their relatives, because it was too dangerous to travel through the occupied territories. the zionist i was arguing with responded "well then maybe egypt should defend its borders better to stop them getting through!" which wasn't the point i was trying to make at all :S one guy got the shits at us for using the israeli flag and "dragging it" along the ground, but security told him to calm down.

anyways, it lasted about 15 minutes and afterwards we went around and talked to students (a coupla people wanted to have their photo taken with me :S). one guy came up and told me that he was a zionist who was interested in setting up jew-arab discussion groups on the issue at uts, similar to something he'd started at mac.. i told him that i was neither jewish nor arab but that i'd be happy to help set up discussion groups around the issue of the palestinian struggle.. perhaps even organise an open forum sometime soon.

all in all i was really happy with the outcome. we managed to get our message across to a large numebr of students through theatre and leafletting... as an awareness raising action, i thought it was heaps successful

sorry about the blurriness of the photos, i'm never giving my camera to that particular friend again :P although to be fair i spose we were moving around a lot ;)

also got the whole thing on film, w00t!

sausages and cupcakes, and yep it was free.

afterwards the pres of awjs (who ive had a coupla classes with last year) came into the students association to offer us some cupcakes.. my friends flatly refused (cos they had israeli flags in them... and also cos it was clearly a "peace offering" and yeah, was so dodgy.) but they looked yum :(

by the way i have a friend at mac who was interested in doing something similar, but wasn't sure when/if awjs were doing israel day there

Now there was a good idea.... (blows knowingly on fingernails, then polishes them on chest) ;)

Nice pics RB.

We missed it on UNSW - found out it was Tuesday on the day (Res had a film screening there). Pity - UNSW is the AUJS heartland in Sydney, where they tend to call security on people who don't like the occupation (ie. us).

Mac Uni almost certainly would have one too - the only question is 'have we missed it?'.
(Note to self- check out UWS.... not that'd be interesting..... UWS Bankstown Israel Day -  )

Yeah. Wally - el gaucho baludo.

Hey, do you remember/ did you hear about the installations that Zanny Begg did a year or so ago of cardboard cut-out IDF soldier "check-points" across the city? And the response?

Well here's my thoughts on the GLW that i got (number 680)

- Really enjoyed all the stuff about on the war in lebanon/israel/iraq - all that kind of stuff, all really good pieces, and worth reading.

-Really enjoyed all the stuff about the fight against IR reform, all the info on strike (and solidarity0 actions, related prosecutions from around the country, all worth reading, informative etc.

-Didn't care too much about Dick Nichols article, 'Global imbalances and financial volatility'- fuckin boring-as eco piece, i couldnt finish reading it was such a chore.

-Didnt care too much about all the venezuela shit, even though i like chavez to some degree (his provocations of the US are pretty funny), the 'viva chavez' stuff is a little old, eh.

-Really enjoyed the article on Tahiti, and the other bit of 'world news', the Tahiti article was the best though.

So yeah, i liked everything except for the dry economics article and all hoo-har about the venezuelan 'revolution' :)

Glad you liked it - you should subscribe. ;) (sub = no free GLW from the IDF!)

I'll pass your comments - not that it'll make any difference. Dick's series on global economics ain't going away (and I like economics, would you belive - it's easier than law).

And as for the Venezuela stuff, well.... there is a revolution going on over there old chap... and it's not done and dusted just yet. Dunno if "old" is really the word for it. Plus the developments in Bolivia. It's worth keeping a close eye on what's going on over there. (Not enough ecuador articles tho')

there are a lot of really good writers and i'm with BD on the quality of the articles. i find them infinitely interesting most of the time.
