Just wondering what you comrades that have seen the movie Juice (1992) and what you think of it. It stars Omar Epps and Tupac Shakur I personally think it's one of the best movies involving the underlying factors behind the gun violence in the African American community. I think its important for us revolutionaries to try and understand the issues in economically depressed areas of North America because its a revolutionary breeding ground.

lots of these people though don't want to overthrow the system, rather they want to be part of it. they want to be part of capitalism. they want money, the houses, the fancy cars and clothes. they dont have a big understanding about socialism and real democracy most of their time spend is on rap music and movies that portrait having money as a sign of success!

this is an important issue for me. working with many rappers in the south central L.A. area they are against the system and hate the cops and all forms of oppression but at the same time like i mentioned above they dont want to better their peoples situation. most of em just wanna 'get theirs" because in the ghetto thats what people are taught by their peers, gangs, movies and rap music.

there has to be a way to make them aware that the reason they live the way they do and are kept down is because the very thing they believe is the key and that they believe is success is what keeps their and our people down. joining capitalism and getting status for you and your family is not the answer and "your way out the hood" destroying capitalism is!

how do we educate people on such things?

The movie isn't as good as other movies, in respect to understanding the problems of urban America
"New Jack City" "Menace 2 Society" and "Boys N the Hood" are better movies, in these flicks the system is extensively analyzed and portrayed in all its reality
The problem with "Juice" is that it doesn't emphasize one single problem in all of its detail
Its basically about Bishop's attitude and his actions

However, "New Jack City" covers almost every aspect of the drug business in urban America
"Menace 2 Society" and "Boys N the Hood" profoundly cover the problem of gangs, violence, and police brutality without making either movie just about one character

how do we educate people on such things?

Following the example of the BP's
Making them aware of their conditions and then comparing them to the conditions of those who hold power and control
Reminding them that they're being played by record exec's, cops, and politicians
Raising their consciousness in respect to social problems (jails, poverty, homicides,...) and how these problems primarily effect those living urban areas

Just think of how we're all being played, and make them aware of this

I agree with Tekun. I think Juice is a lot more of a Psychological thriller then a critique of society, which is what the creators of Boys in the Hood and Menace II Society were aiming to do. This is not to say that Juice isn't a great flick, not to mention an exhibition of 2Pac's great talent.

Another great film with Pac that does analyze society a bit more is Grd'locked(sp?), though I think there might be underlieing tones of reactionaryism (take responsibility for yourself attitude) probably because it was scripted by liberals, who knows.
