DO you believe that there will be a physical end of the world? Climactic, dramatic, maybe even according to a mainstream religion?...Elaborate on this. Thanks

Yes, I do. When the Universe collapses back into its self. -_-

The world as in the planet Earth, human kind or as in the universe? The Earth: yes. But not climactic, dramatic or according to any religion. A mere expansion of the Sun over millions of years that makes the Earth inhospitable to life and eventually engulfs it. Human kind: possibly, if events happen that prevent society from technologically progressing, the havoc that we are wreaking on our environment could severely retard the development of human society. Make us extinct, probably not, but destroy the technologically advanced society we have and send us back into hunter-gatherer lifestyles, maybe. The universe: I have no clue, don't know enough about physics to say, maybe though depending on the structure of the universe (if there is one).

No. Time is a human construct so there cannot be a beginning or end, technically.

I don't think they meant an end to time or to physical existence itself, just to the "world" as in the Earth or humankind.

Scientifically, I think that is proven. Humans will either evolve into something entirely different or become extinct.

The Earth I don't know about. It is probably (if current behavior continues) going to be destroyed.

Elaborate.

If you are talking about qn end to humanity, yes. We may never get of this planet and simply stagnate and die; we could expand a little bit and then be wiped out by ourselves or some outside influence; or we could evolve so greatly that we cease to be what we would call "human", or "ascend".

If you mean an end to Earth, of course, but thatt will b long after we're gone from this planet.

Yes, one of these days our world will end. However, this is not the end of time as their are most likely other organisms on other planets in other galaxies that will continue to live on. Time is a creation of mankind. Even if this universe ends, others will be constantly beginning.

And no, it won't have to do with mainstream religion or any religion for that matter.

You're answers..they were enlightening..I think that well there will jsut be some epidemic (more graual than anything and MOST likely our fault) that will either make us dwindle or wipe us out...good to hear opinions though....

We're on the verge of making a breakthrough in the power of our technology so great that it would dwarf anything in human history.

Molecular Transistor (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/06/02/MNGUOD1V1P1.DTL)

Think about this for a moment. All that makes us human as compared to other animals are our unique brains. A brain is no more than an organized collection of brain cells that are cellular switches. We have gone beyond that in that we are able to make switches the size of single molecules. What is the logical step from this development? It is that the transferring of our brain contents and hence our individual personalities and intelligence to external hardware is inevitable barring the possibility that we destroy ourselves. Will there be doomsday? Not if we could prevent it. If we do then we really have something to look forward to.

Time is not "merely" a human construct. It is the fourth dimension we've discovered operating in our reality. Saying it doesn't exist is just as ridiculous as saying the z-axis (ie third dimension) doesn't exist.

If humanity fails to evolve itself and technology to the point necessary for communism/anarchism, as well as the ability to create sustainable pockets of society beyond the earth, then yes--humanity will become extinct. If something happens before that point, such as a stray comet, etc.. then yes, humanity will become extinct. In fact, the whole universe is working against our not becoming extinct.. or, rather, it isn't working in our favor. So if we fail to control the universe (or at least our surroundings far beyond earth) and instead let it control us, we will die off at some point.

Some people would still survive that regardless especially with our new technology.

Of course, humans and the world may be gone in the future. There are many scenarios for that.

Well like was already said time isnt really a human invention, sure we put the name "Time" and smacked units and measurements on it but it always existed. In a manner of speaking it is the 4th dimension but Id advise no one to call it that, it will get messy, as its not truely. there are 11 spacial dimensions and time is part of them all. space-time, same thing there is no need to seperate them into seperate dimentions, but if you want either call it the 12th or a non-spacial 4th.

Time cant exactly end, becasue that would also mean the end of space. if that happens we have no possible way of knowing the possibiliys of after so we can ignore it.

As humans, we wont be around to see any of this of course, even allowing for huge advances in technology and such its not feasible for us to be around for much longer than (at the extreme most, bout 10 million years, allowing for genitic decay and so forth). But more likely than not we'll be dead in a million. its not like it has any consequence on the universe though..

There are going to be multiple ways that the world will end, global warming destroying all life, supernova, frozen core, heck, maybe even the Four Horsemen. What I found interesting a while ago was a site that (sort of) research a lot of was the world could end, in all scientific, religous, and fictional standpoints. Got my attention.

If we go with the most known four dimensions, time is simply a non-spatial dimension. Events occur in the temporal dimension just as they occur in the spatial dimensions. We stuck units and measurements on time, just as we did with the spatial dimensions.

All dimensions, including time, are a subset of the Universe. If the Universe ended, we can assume that time will also end. How the Universe will end is another question. Until recently there were three main scenarios: open Universe (it keeps expanding forever), closed Universe (it will collapse under its own gravity), and a flat Universe (where everything no expansion or collapse takes place).

Recently (late 90s or early 00s, I believe), observations were made that showed that not only is the Universe expanding, but this expansion is accelerating. We're not completely sure what's going on, but this acceleration has been attributed to 'Dark Energy', a type of repulsive force that has influence at great distances. Dark energy theory needs more dimensions that the simple 4-D Universe we previously had.

So, with what we know now, the Universe will not collapse in on itself. If the expansion continues, the Universe will cool down and eventually become dark and dead.

I don't think the end of the world will be like religion's think. But at the moment i can see the end of least humans coming, some people will likely survive- but if they do there will probably only be a limited time before something happens that cold put an end to our world. Though like has been said the four horse men of the apocalypse would be a funny one, imagine seeing them come towards you one morning (or night) .

An apocalypse is inevitable in the long run, beyond all doubt, because all matter in the universe, at the level of protons, neutrons, electrons, quarks etc has a life span of X bajillion years. And the theory is, from the big bang, they all have the same life span. So in one moment, there is the universe. Next moment, nothing at all. Weird thought.

I think that matter is controlled and controllable. Quantum physicists who are eyebrows deep in string theory state that there aren't three or four dimensions of universe reality, but ten. To think that we are at the centre of the universe is false thinking... we have no idea where we are situated. Scientists first thought that the universe was expanding, only to contract, but new evidence is showing that we are actually orbiting some large gravity controller. Evidence also points out that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. To believe in the "end of the world" is to forfeit insight on human evolution. Albeit we evolve slowly, we are progressing towards perfection. Just as hell cannot possibly exist, neither can a separate realm called heaven. These are myths passed down from cults and religions. What does exist is total reality, and to place boundaries on that is silly, we are too inexperienced and basically too bound by this electro-chemical marriage to easily transcend this thought trap... but human transcendence... the ability to better ourselves, is the trademark of an experiencial being. If we grow, why cannot we continue to grow? Only things bound to the physical laws are destined to death. We are a dual being.
