My opinion is that the artist did a good job drawing a red-orange rectangle in a field of blue.

You're obviously not working class.
Working class people cannot relate to this kind of 'abstract' shit, working class people only understand realistic art, not this kind of abstract bourgeois non-sense,
You know? Like Socialist Realism, that's real art! :hammer:

That's because every piece of abstract art IS done by a 5yr old child! I'm sorry, huge generalisation and I'm probably insulting a lot of people, but if abstract art is stuff like that unmade bedroom or a thumbprint in bluetac or some shit, its not art. Hell, I think that if Tate Modern were burned to the ground along with all the "artists" who contributed to the works inside it, the average level of artistic talent in the world would actually increase.
Hmm, I suppose that rant means I am working class after all - hurray! :D

I don't like it. I despise modern art anyway, so take from this what you will.
I like art, in its original form , as something that means something, is recognisable, and brings out an emotion in me.
That is just a blueish smear with an orange rectangle in it. It means fuck all to me.
And this is not flaming. :o

I don't understand this bullshit.
I assume the intention was to get across a feeling of isolation, or maybe independence. Orange is a warm and cosy colour, blue and white are baron. To me it puts across the same feeling as a painting of a cottage in a snowy field.
I don't really like it, but I appreciate it.

I don't really care to tell you the truth.
Most abstract "art" is really ugly and just stupid. But of course you'll have a massive following of pretentious art snobs who praise it as some kind of masterpiece.
I prefer abstract art that is not painted, stuff with string and wire and wood and whatnot. But even then is it hard to find pieces that don't look like shit.

I have actually tried to do something crazy in an art forum once. I simply threw painting on a paper, and worked on it for about 2-3 minutes. I precented it as a piece I had been working on for a couple of months. They actually belived me.
I am not saying that this type of art is bad or anything, however there may be scammers out there who say they put alot of work into this when they dont, and then they sel their "masterpieces" for 1000 bucks +
Abstract art can be good, I have seen alots of it, but thats the paintings that actually have real WORK behind them. I enjoy looking at them wondering what the artist thought of, and trying to make some sense of the chaos.

All "Art Appreciation" classes are shit. If theres one word of advice I'd like to give to all budding artists, it's to be wary of supposed art teachers.
In my opinion, DaVinci was a total twat. I find no emotion in realistic/naturalist/renaissance art. It's so dry.

I went into a gallery a little while ago for the archibald prize, the first piece that caught my attention was a two canves set. One canvas was pink the other blue, I was told it was good because nobody had thought of it and it was creative. I get more creative when I paint my room or spraypaint some graffiti.

I think all this abstract art is so abstract its not art, its shit. The critics all talk as if they know what they are talking about but they don't even know because there is nothing to know. People don't understand it because there is nothing to understand. If people want to paint what comes from within, paint some vomit.

FoB, you're never going to get people to agree about which type of art is most appealing, whether impressionism is better than cubism or what art means because it means plenty to some and bugger all to others. Personally I love your picture and frankly it wouldn't worry me if I discovered it had been painted by a horse.
The beauty of art is that it doesn't have to mean anything except to the artist - the joy of art is that it does.
I spent last weekend with my daughter at Tate Liverpool, gazing at Rothko, Picasso, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Caulfield, Perry, the Chapmans and so on, then down to Crosby Beach to take a look at the Anthony Gormley installation, Another Place. Utterly, utterly beautiful. :)
All "Art Appreciation" classes are shit.
I certainly agree with that! Art appreciation comes from inside, not outside.
