G.O.P. Sets Aside Work on Immigration As they prepare for a critical pre-election legislative stretch, Congressional Republican leaders have all but abandoned a broad overhaul of immigration laws and instead will concentrate on national security issues they believe play to their political strength.

Tougher Audience for Immigration Rallies: With congressional midterm elections just a couple of months away, neither side of the issue looks likely to yield for a legislative compromise. "The struggle isn't going to be won in a day," said Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, a march organizer. And how new is all this Spanish in the US?

325 years ago "44 pioneers and four soldiers from Mission San Gabriel set up camp on the banks of the Porciuncula River and founded El Pueblo de Nuestra Seora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula. In 1860, William Henry Brewer, a founding member of the California Geological survey, visited the town and wrote, "The inhabitants are a mixture of old Spanish, Indian, American, and German Jews; the last two have come in lately. The language of the natives is Spanish, and I have commenced learning it." http://www.latimes. com/features/ printedition/ magazine/ la-tm-rearview36 sep03,0,368348. story?coll= la-headlines- magazine
