It's a load of bullshit.
Well, so are all other religions but Scientology is really a load of bullshit. It actually kinda works like a pyramid scheme, some people spend all their money on the Church of Scientology.
They believe weird shit like aliens on airplanes and some god called Xenu who lives in some other universe.

Aliens did shit, so send all your money to the PO Box or you won't be saved.
That's it in a nutshell.

it's more science fiction that people bought into as being a viable source of salvation.

If scientology did not have all those rich/famous people like Kristi Allie (or however you spell her name) Tom Cruise, or John Travolta, they would have been busted for extortion and fraud.
I respect people's religion, but this is just a cult, you have to pay to get in it, and notice how one of the highest ranking members is also one of their biggest contributers (Tom Cruise).
One of the revleft members has a link in his/her sig about scientology and how it is a dangerous cult. I'll post it if I find out who it is.

From what I've seen it's the Church of scientology that is the real danger, there are other sects that seem totally harmless and dare I say it, benevolent.

As Ron Hubbard said, if you want to become rich, set up your own religion :D

South Park explains Scientology (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLnsBv6UQ-o)
Yeah. Basically a cult. The creator even wrote a book about how to make money by starting a religion  . And there's been a few rumours of kidnappings of people who have tried to leave the church. But I don't know much about that.

The aliens were killed on the side of a volcano on Venus a long time ago.
They weren't killed by the volcano erupting either, they were killed by hydrogen bombs.

Hardly. That's like claiming Catholicism would be illegal if the Pope didn't wear such a big hat. Scientology is a religion and so is protected by the same laws established to protect all religions. So its naked greed, name an organised religion that isn't.
And, for the record, claiming that aliens once used Earth as some sort of prison is hardly more far fetched than claiming that a Jewish carpenter died and rose again 2,000 years ago.

Exactly. Nor is more far fetched than any other religion out there. All religions, no matter what kind are completely ridiculous and should be ridiculed constantly.

While other religions may be ridiculous, you don't have to pay to get into them. ;)

Buddhism
True. Everyone knows (http://www.education-1.net/catalogbud.htm) that there's no money (http://search.ebay.ie/Buddhism_W0QQfltZ9QQfromZR8) to be made from Buddhism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Campaign_Finance_Scandal#Maria_Hsia_and_the_H si_Lai_Buddhist_Temple)

Yes, but see it is not mandatory to pay to become a Buddhist.
While yes, you could buy something relating to buddhism, you are not required to; you could also take classes, but again, you are not required to do that to become a buddhist; and there might be a scandal with their leaders, but those scandals are not part of their religion. In fact, they are quite the contrary.
As far as I am aware of, you must pay some kind of fee to become a scientologist, or the scientologist 'bible' is an outragious fee, soley to make as much money as they can off of suckers willing to buy into that shit, not to cover the printing/production costs. I would be happy to research it more, but I must catch up on sleep.

Every religion requires commitments from converts. Scientology, being a product of the most modern epoch, merely demands cash. I actually find it refreshing that they put a price on their teachings instead of passing the collection plate or doling out wisdom for donations.

Because of its nonsensical beliefs? That's hardly something the Scientologists have a monopoly on. Scientology is a proper religion in every sense of the word. The only difference exists in the minds of the more moralistic that consider one set of "truths" more believable than those of others.
