Man gets deferred judgment for clinic assault
By Mike McWilliams
Iowa City Press-Citizen
A Davenport man arrested for breaking into the Emma Goldman
Clinic after assaulting a worker in the parking lot received
a deferred judgment today.
William Dennis Owens-Holst, 32, pleaded guilty last month to
third-degree burglary and simple assault. Johnson County
District Court Judge Marsha Beckelman ordered Owens-Holst to
serve five years of supervised probation and ordered him to
follow treatment recommendations from corrections officials.
Beckelman also ordered Owens-Holst to stay away from the
Emma Goldman Clinic, 227 N. Dubuque St., its staff,
volunteers or patients. He received a suspended $750 fine
and must pay $435 in restitution to cover damages to the
clinic and an employee's cell phone.
According to Iowa City police reports, Owens-Holst grabbed a
clinic employee around her neck with his arm and threw her
against a car in the Emma Goldman parking lot May 16. He
snatched a cell phone from the woman's hand and smashed it
on the ground. The woman was not injured.
The woman called police from a nearby sorority house about
8:15 a.m. Upon arrival, officers learned that Owens-Holst
had entered the building by breaking a window. He was
"talked out" of the building by officers and arrested.
Owens-Holst allegedly told officers he broke into the 227 N.
Dubuque St. clinic "to break the fingers of the abortion
doctors so they couldn't kill babies," police reports show.
Owens-Holst has told the court that he has schizoaffective
disorder, which includes symptoms of schizophrenia and
depression, according to the National Alliance on Mental
Illness.
Beckelman deferred judgment on the case for three years,
which means that if Owens-Holst stays out of trouble during
that time, the charge will be cleared from his record.

IOWA CITY, IA -- The man accused of a May 15 break-in at the
Emma Goldman Clinic for Women and assault on an employee
there received a deferred judgment today.
William D. Owens-Holst, 32, of Davenport, was placed on
probation for five years, ordered to have no contact with
anyone at the Emma Goldman Clinic and ordered to follow any
treatment recommendations by corrections officials.
Owens-Holst also received a suspended $750 fine and was
ordered to repay $435 in restitution to the clinic.
Owens-Holst pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary and
simple assault in July after reaching a deal with
prosecutors, dismissed a charge of fifth-degree criminal
mischief against him.
Judge Marsha Beckelman said she was "greatly disturbed" by
Owens-Holst's behavior, but said she felt a deferred
judgment would provide him the best chance at getting treatment.
Owens-Holst was accused of breaking a window and entering
the clinic, 227 N. Dubuque St., and assaulting a female
clinic employee outside the building. Owens-Holst told
police he smashed his way into the clinic because he wanted
to "break the fingers of the abortion doctors so they
couldn't kill babies."
Attorney John Robertson has said Owens-Holst suffers from
schizoaffective disorder.
Assistant Johnson County Attorney Michael Brennan
recommended Owens-Holst receive a suspended five-year prison
sentence and be placed on probation for five years, spend
time at a residential treatment facility, repay the clinic
$435, and have no contact with clinic employees.
