There are no communist countries. People often say that Cuba, DPRK, USSR are/were communist, but the truth is that there weren't and there are no communist countries. So far ;)

So you thought England was communist!?

anyway. "Communism" refers to a stateless society. However the term "Communist country/state" could be applied to a "Marxist" country, which wants to help establish communism.

Only Cuba currently meets with definition.

By the way, adz170, you may look at almost any thread in Opposing Ideologies. There is always somebody who asks about Communist and Capitalist countries.

Technically there are 5 "communist" countries (as in countries with a communist ideology). The People's Republic of China, The Republic of Cuba, The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Lao People's Democratic Republic, and The Socialist Republic of Vietnam. None of those countries are "communist" as in a classless society. It would also be arguable how democratic some of those countries are...

You forgot Moldova. (well their about as "communist" as Vietnam, but they claim to have a communist ideology)

A lot of people on this board, when the issue of "communist countries" is brought up, tend to say "what are you talking there never have been nor are there presently any 'communist countries' ".

This isn't much help, you need to clarify how marxism-leninism works.

There is also an apparent implication that these societies were not part of the (pure) communist tradition, they were aberrations.

Cuba is led by communists, so was the USSR. Both of these societies attempted to build socialism as pre-requisite to a stateless, classless society. They did so in a trailblazing way confronted by bloodthirsty imperialists. Mistakes were made.
Welcome to the human race.

Some stupid fucking things were done in the USSR, but there were glorious achievements as well.

I can't attest to the ideological soundness of the DPRK.
